Maria Belaya Named CAA Player of the Week, Earns National Ranking

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary women's tennis junior Maria Belaya was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week following an upset of the No. 37-ranked player in the country during the Tribe's win over No. 58 Georgia State. It marked the second CAA Player of the Week honor for Belaya this season and third of her W&M career. Belaya also earned her first national singles ranking of the season at No. 124 in the poll released on Tuesday.
Belaya, who took home the singles honor on Feb. 20 as well, pushed the team's total of player of the week honors to four on the year. Freshman Leeza Nemchinov and junior Jeltje Loomans each took home the CAA Player of the Week honor during the 2013 campaign as well. Belaya garnered her 10th CAA weekly award overall after receiving doubles team of the week accolades on seven occasions over the last two campaigns.

In the Tribe's 4-3 win over Georgia State, Belaya clinched the team victory with a three-set win at the top singles position. The Tribe junior bounced No. 37-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah, 7-5, 6-7, 6-1, as W&M rallied past the Panthers. It marked Belaya's 30th singles win during her two seasons with the Tribe. This year, she owns 18 wins, including 12 in dual-match play. The win over Tere-Apisah, who was ranked as high as No. 22 this season, was Belaya's second over a nationally-ranked foe this season.

Along with earning CAA Player of the Week honors, Belaya moved into the Campbell's ITA National Singles Rankings, released on Tuesday. She received her first national singles ranking of the 2013 campaign at No. 124 and is the lone CAA player in the national standings. Belaya and junior Jeltje Loomans remained in the national doubles top 10 at No. 8 nationally. As a team, W&M moved up five spots to the No. 41 spot nationally in the poll released on April 9.

The Tribe will close out the regular season with Senior Day on Saturday, April 13, against Old Dominion. W&M will host the Monarchs at Millie West Tennis Facility beginning at 2 p.m. Ten points will be up for grabs in the Optima Health Challenge, a running score of all the direct competitions between W&M and ODU. For the second consecutive year, the Tribe and Monarchs have partnered with title sponsor, Optima Health, for the Challenge. A champion will be named at the end of the 2012-13 athletic season and receive the Optima Health Trophy. The current standings are tied at 45 with 10 points available in each of the three remaining sports (men's tennis, women's tennis and baseball). The contest will also be Senior Day as the Tribe honors its two-member senior class of Anik Cepeda and Marlen Mesgarzadeh.
