WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Following a two-week hiatus, the William and Mary women's
tennis team will look to continue its seven-match winning streak as it travels
to the Washington, D.C. area for a pair of tilts. The Green and Gold will
travel to BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Saturday, March 16, before trekking to
ACC counterpart Maryland on Sunday, March 17. Both matches carry a noon start time.
Scouting the Tribe
W&M enters the weekend, having won seven straight in
amassing an 11-2 mark of the year. The Tribe has been ranked as high as No. 25
this season, but was No. 33 in the Campbell's ITA Rankings released on March
12. The Green and Gold opened a five-match road swing with a 5-2 victory over
Wake Forest in its last outing on March 3. The Tribe won the doubles point with
victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, before senior
Anik Cepeda, juniors
Maria Belaya and
Sydney Smith and freshman
Leeza Nemchinov tallied
singles wins to upended the Demon Deacons. Cepeda currently leads the Tribe
with 19 singles wins on the season, including an impressive 11-2 dual-match
ledger. Nemchinov is also 11-2 in dual-match play on the way to 17 wins
overall, while Belaya owns 15 wins on the year, including nine toward the top of
the Tribe lineup.
Scouting Georgetown
The Hoyas are 7-3 on the year, including a 1-2 ledger in the
BIG EAST. Georgetown, which will host a doubleheader against James Madison and
Bryant on Friday before meeting the Tribe, is coming off a pair of wins in
Florida last week. The Hoyas won at Florida International, 4-3, before upending
Nova Southeastern, 5-2. After dropping season opener at VCU, Georgetown reeled
off five straight wins, before its two BIG EAST losses to St. John's and South
Florida. Vicky Sekely holds down the No. 1 singles position for the Hoyas and
is 7-4 on the year, including a 5-2 mark at the top spot. Kelly Comolli owns 11
doubles wins to lead Georgetown, while posing nine singles wins, including four
at No. 2. Sophie Panarese leads the team with 12 singles wins. W&M owns victories in each of the previous two meetings between the schools, including a win in Washington, D.C. during the 1982 campaign. Last
season, the Green ad Gold downed Georgetown, 5-2, in Williamsburg.
Scouting Maryland
Maryland suffered three straight losses to teams from the
state of Virginia and sit at 4-6 overall, including a 0-3 mark in ACC play. Last
weekend, the Terrapins suffered losses to No. 47 Virginia and No. 63 Virginia
Tech. The Terps are 4-2 at home on the season and will host Penn on Saturday,
before facing the Tribe on Sunday. W&M and Maryland have four common
opponents in Richmond, UMBC, Harvard and Virginia Tech. The Tribe is 4-0
against the group, while the Terps are 2-2. The differences are against Harvard
and Virginia Tech, where W&M notched wins over the Crimson, 5-2, and the
Hokies, 4-3, while Maryland dropped contests to Harvard, 6-1 and at Virginia
Tech, 5-2. Vroni Van Berlo is the Terps' top singles player, posting a 6-4
ledger at the No. 1 post. Van Berlo and Sarah Gealer have been Maryland's top
doubles team, posting four wins. The Tribe leads the all-time series with the
Terps at 24-4, including a 6-2 mark in College Park, but Maryland claimed a 5-2
win over the Green and Gold in Williamsburg last season.

accolade following the Tribe's performance at Wake Forest. It marks the
fourth and fifth weekly awards for the Green and Gold this season as junior
Maria
Belaya was named the CAA Player of the Week on Feb. 20, while Belaya and junior
Jeltje Loomans have been named the doubles team of the week on two occasions.

Loomans continued to roll through the competition this season. The duo owns a 20-2
mark overall, including an 11-1 dual-match ledger. They have won nine straight matches entering the weekend. The pair has been ranked
among the top five doubles teams in the country throughout the spring season
and currently resides at No. 5 in the standing released on March 12.

W&M will travel to No. 29 Rice on Saturday, March 23, before taking on
Houston on Sunday, March 24.
