Women's Tennis Jumps to No. 25 Nationally; Doubles Team Ranked No. 2

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Riding a six-match winning streak, the William and Mary women's tennis team continued to move up in the Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Rankings, jumping into the national top 25 in the poll released on Tuesday. The Tribe doubles team of juniors Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans moved up to No. 2 in the national doubles rankings and was named CAA Doubles Team of the Week for the second time this season.

The Tribe rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Penn, 6-1, and James Madison, 5-2, in improving to 10-2 on the year. The Tribe's 10-2 ledger is the third-best in school history through 12 contests and the best since the 2007 squad won 11 straight to open the season. W&M is a perfect 6-0 against the ITA Atlantic Region and 2-0 in CAA play during the 2013 campaign. The Tribe's No. 25 national ranking is it's highest since being ranked No. 24 on Feb. 24, 2009. W&M opened the 2009 dual-match season ranked No. 22 nationally.

Belaya and Loomans remained in the top five in the national doubles ranking, ascending to the No. 2 spot, which is a career high. The duo began the dual-match campaign ranked No. 3 nationally and was at No. 4 most recently. The Tribe pair owns six wins over teams in the current national rankings, including four in the top 25. It marks the highest national ranking for a Tribe doubles teams since Megan Moulton-Levy, who is currently competing on the women's professional tennis circuit and ranking among the top 100 world-wide in doubles, and Katarina Zoricic were ranked No. 1 during the 2007 fall campaign. Belaya and Loomans are 38-8 over the last two years, including a 23-3 mark in dual-match play.

For the second time this season and seventh overall, Belaya and Loomans were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week, the league announced on Wednesday. The pair helped W&M to the doubles point with wins at the top position against Penn and James Madison. Belaya and Loomans ran their win streak to eight matches with the wins, including an 8-3 win over the No. 22-ranked Penn duo of Sonya Latycheva and Sol Eskenazi. The Tribe tandem is 19-2 overall on the year, including a remarkable 10-1 in dual-match play.

The Tribe returns to action when it hits the road for the first of five away from Williamsburg during the month of March. W&M treks to Winston-Salem, N.C., to meet ACC foe Wake Forest on Sunday, March 3 at noon.
