WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William and Mary women's tennis team returns to the
friendly confines of the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center as it faces in second
straight national top-20 foe in No. 18 Mississippi on Tuesday. The match is
slated for a 6 p.m. start time in Williamsburg and live stats will be available at
TribeAthletics.com.
Following its first setback of the season at No. 3 Duke on
Saturday, the College sits at 2-1 on the campaign. W&M opened the season
with a doubleheader sweep of defending Atlantic 10 Champion Richmond, 6-1, and UMBC, 6-1, on Jan. 15. The Green and Gold
are led by its No. 3 nationally ranked doubles team of juniors
Maria Belaya and
Jeltje Loomans, who are 11-2 on the season. Senior
Anik Cepeda and junior
Sydney Smith top W&M in singles wins with nine apiece, while
Belaya and freshman
Leeza Nemchinov each have eight. All four players possess 2-1 dual match records.
Ole Miss is coming off an 18-9 season which included an 8-3
SEC mark and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Mark Beyers is
in his 12th season at the helm of the Rebel program, earning ITA South Region
Coach of the Year honors in two of the last three seasons. Mississippi's top
player is Carolina Rohde-Moe, who is ranked No. 30 nationally. Rohde-Mo
finished the fall at 11-6 overall and was the runner-up in the ITA South Region Singles Championship
after earning Second-Team All-SEC honors in 2012. Sophomore Julia Jones was an
SEC All-Freshman team selection last season and finished the fall at 8-5.
Following the tilt with the Rebels, the Tribe will travel to
Cambridge, Mass., for a pair of matches against nationally-ranked foes over the
weekend. The College faces the No. 74-ranked Harvard Crimson on Friday, Jan.
25, at 3 p.m., before meeting No. 67-ranked Kansas State on Saturday, Jan. 26,
at noon. Both matches will be played at the Murr Center on
Harvard's campus.
