WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Coming off a season-opening doubleheader sweep, the William and
Mary women's tennis team hits the road to take on No. 3-ranked Duke on Saturday,
Jan. 19. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. start time at the Sheffield
Indoor Tennis Center in Durham. Live stats for the W&M-Duke match
will be available at GoDuke.com and fans can purchase the video stream for all courts
at a cost of $9.95.
W&M opened the season with a pair of 6-1 wins over
Richmond and UMBC on Jan. 15. The Green and Gold won the doubles point in both
matches thanks to victories from the No. 3 nationally ranked team of juniors
Maria Belaya
and
Jeltje Loomans as well as the Green and Gold duo of senior
Anik Cepeda and
freshman
Leeza Nemchinov. In singles action, Belaya, Loomans, Nemchinov, Cepeda
and junior
Sydney Smith each tallied two singles wins on the day to lead the
Tribe charge.
The Blue Devils, who open the 2013 campaign against W&M on Saturday, won the ACC Championship and advanced to the
NCAA semifinals last season, before finishing the campaign at 29-3. In his 16th
season, head coach Jamie Ashworth is a perfect 15-0 in home openers in Durham. Duke sports a lineup that features four nationally ranked singles
players and a pair of nationally ranked doubles team. Hanna Mar is the highest
ranked Blue Devil player at No. 10 nationally followed by No. 40 Ester
Goldfeld, No. 53 Mary Clayton and No. 63 Marianne Jodoin. In doubles, Beatrice
Capra and Mar are ranked No. 6 nationally, while Goldfeld and Mar are No.
17.
The meeting between the Tribe and Blue Devils will the 31st
all-time meeting with Duke leading the series at 21-9. The Blue Devils won
the last four meetings between the schools, including a 7-0 victory in Durham last
season. W&M last tallied a win in the series producing two straight victories in
2005 and 2006.
Following the match with the Blue Devils, W&M returns
home to host No. 18-ranked Mississippi on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The match carries a
6 p.m. start time at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center and live stats will
