Brandon Heroux (Westfield, N.J.) was named the Men's Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year Monday by the Colonial Athletic Association, the latest in a long line of honors for the All-American thrower. Heroux was also named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2010. The award was voted on by the conference's sports information offices, from nominees that carried a GPA over 3.3 and were starters or important reserves.
Heroux, who graduated in May with a degree in finance, capped off his four years by earning first-team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships last week. He threw a school-record 73.55 meters (241-4) in the finals of the javelin to take eighth overall, and requalified himself to the Canadian Olympic Trials next week. Heroux also won his fourth-straight CAA title in the javelin with a conference-record throw of 71.34m (234-1), becoming the first athlete in conference history to win the javelin four years in a row. In total, each of his four throws in 2012 ranked among the top-six ever at W&M, and he finished his career owning each of the top-11 throws in school history and 18 of the top 20.
Heroux will try and earn a spot at this summer's London Olympics beginning next week at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Calgary. In addition to placing among the top three through the prelims on June 27 and finals on June 29, Heroux needs to throw at least 77m (252-7) to meet the Olympic qualifying standards.
