Tribe Duo Falls in National Indoor Quarterfinals

FLUSHING, N.Y. - The William and Mary women's tennis doubles team of juniors Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans fell in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship on Friday morning at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 12th-ranked Green and Gold pair fell in a battle top 20 teams to the No. 17-ranked Alabama duo of Alexa Guarachi and MaryAnne Macfarlane, 8-2.

With the setback, Belaya and Loomans, who were seeded No. 3 in the national championship event, closed out the fall season at 9-1. The Green and Gold tandem earned a spot in the National Indoor Championship by winning the ITA Atlantic Region Championship in October. The Alabama duo advance to the semifinals where it will face the top-seeded USC team of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria.

The only championship to showcase elite players from every level of collegiate sports, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, the prestigious event is the second of three individual national championship tournaments in college tennis and features exclusion championship draws of 32 singles players and 20 doubles teams for both the men and women.

W&M will close out of fall season with players competing at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The event kicks off on today and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11.
