FLUSHING, N.Y. - The William and Mary women's tennis doubles team of juniors
Maria Belaya and
Jeltje Loomans fell in the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA
National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship on Friday morning at the USTA
Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 12th-ranked Green and Gold pair
fell in a battle top 20 teams to the No. 17-ranked Alabama duo of Alexa
Guarachi and MaryAnne Macfarlane, 8-2.
With the setback, Belaya and Loomans,
who were seeded No. 3 in the national championship event, closed out the fall
season at 9-1. The Green and Gold tandem earned a spot in the National Indoor
Championship by winning the ITA Atlantic Region Championship in October. The
Alabama duo advance to the semifinals where it will face the top-seeded USC
team of Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria.
The only championship to showcase elite
players from every level of collegiate sports, the USTA/ITA National Indoor
Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season.
Hosted by Columbia University, the prestigious event is the second of three
individual national championship tournaments in college tennis and features
exclusion championship draws of 32 singles players and 20 doubles teams for
both the men and women.
W&M will close out of fall season
with players competing at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The event kicks off on today and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11.
