Andrew Strait (Henrico, Va.), the William and Mary men's swimming team cruised easily past Towson Saturday, 191-89. The Tribe starts the year at 1-0 overall, and 1-0 in the conference, for the eighth-straight season, while the Tigers fall to 0-1 (0-1 CAA).

200 Medley Relay
The Tribe won 13 of the day's 14 swimming events, beginning with the 200 medley relay. The team of
Will Manion (Haddonfield, N.J.), Strait,
Justin Barden (Gordonsville, Va.), and
Ben Ward (Maitland, Fla.) combined to swim 1:32.46 for the win and the sixth-fastest time ever at W&M.
Sidney Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.),
Chris Dong (Chapel Hill, N.C.),
K.J. Shaw (Richmond, Va.), and
Ian Robert (New Canaan, Conn.) took second, with an aggregate time of 1:34.20.
1000 Free
In the 1,000 free, sophomore
Kemp Pettyjohn (Lynchburg, Va.) picked up right where he left off last year with an easy win in 9:33.56, his first of two on the day. Junior
Tyler Poling (Morristown, N.J.) was sixth overall in 10:03.74, scoring an additional point for the team.
200 Free
Senior
Hunter Perrot (Falls Church, Va.) was also a two-time winner on the afternoon, scoring his first in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.52. His classmate
Sidney Glass was third in the race in 1:44.75, and sophomore
Taegan Clarke (Chappaqua, N.Y.) came in fifth in 1:46.48.
100 Back
The 100 back was the first of four events in which the Tribe took the top four spots, led off by a freshman-record performance from
Will Manion. The Olympic Trials-qualifier touched the wall in 49.76, well ahead of the old standard of 50.67 by
Jake Maloy '12 at the 2009 CAA Championships. Manion now ranks third all-time at the College. Classmate
Justin Barden was second in 52.31 seconds, and sophomore
Chad Nowakowski (Forest, Va.) took third in 54.81 seconds. Senior
Evan Rutherford (Newport News, Va.) completed the sweep in 56.40 seconds.
100 Breast
Andrew Strait's big moment came in the 100 breast, where he smashed the existing school record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in 54.85 seconds. It is the fastest time in Division I so far this season, and comes in an event Strait doesn't normally swim at the CAA Championships. Sophomore
Chris Dong was second in 57.59, and classmate
Matt Goetz (Islip, N.Y.), who had the record of 56.19 from last spring's conference meet, took third in 1:00.04.
200 Fly
Senior
K.J. Shaw won his first of the year in the 200 fly, timing 1:54.96 to claim the gold medal. Freshman
Charley Bowles (Yorktown, Va.) was fourth in 1:56.76, and classmate
Ryan Natal (Great Falls, Va.) timed 1:57.11 for fifth place.
50 Free
Senior
Ben Ward was next to post a victory, swimming a career-fast 20.70 seconds in the 50 free for the laurels. An improvement of .13 seconds over his previous best, Ward now ranks fourth in school history in the event. Perrot was second in 21.19, and
Ian Robert took fifth in 21.94 seconds.
100 Free
Coming back from the first break, the two seniors reversed their order from the 50 to go 1-2 in the 100 free as well. Perrot's winning time was 46.47 seconds, and Ward was next to the wall in 47.13. Freshman
Billy Russell (Newport News, Va.) finished fourth, timing 48.10 seconds.
200 Back
Justin Barden claimed his first career victory in the 200 back in 1:53.82, leading another 1-4 sweep for the Tribe. Senior
Sidney Glass was second in 1:56.79, and his younger brother
Austin Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.) was third in 1:58.46.
Chad Nowakowski finished out the sweep in 1:58.69.
200 Breast
Another sweep came straightaway in the 200 breast, with
Andrew Strait's 2:04.28 leading the way.
Chris Dong was second in 2:09.74, and
Charley Bowles was third in 2:12.20. Freshman
Andrew Nyce (Vienna, Va.) touched the wall fourth, in 2:12.64.
500 Free
Pettyjohn's second win came in the 500 free, where he cruised to the wall in 4:39.26. Classmate
Carter Head (Lynchburg, Va.) was sixth overall, timing 4:57.25.
100 Fly
In the 100 fly,
K.J. Shaw finished second overall in 51.44 seconds. Freshman
Jeremiah O'Donnell (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was third in 52.31, and
Ryan Natal was fourth in 52.54 seconds.
200 IM
Andrew Strait won his third event of the day in the 200 IM, finishing well ahead of the pack in 1:53.30. O'Donnell was second in the event, in 1:57.57, and
Charley Bowles took third in 1:58.10.
Andrew Nyce completed the sweep in 2:00.11 for fourth place.
400 Free Relay
W&M also won the closing 400 free relay, with the team of
Hunter Perrot,
Ben Ward,
Ryan Natal, and
Sidney Glass claiming the privilege in 3:09.35. The Tribe also had the third-place quartet, with the team of
Will Manion,
Taegan Clarke,
Billy Russell, and
Justin Barden combining to pass the proverbial baton in 3:13.60.
