The William and Mary men's swimming team went toe-to-toe with one of the top programs in the ACC Saturday afternoon, picking up five event victories before ultimately falling to Virginia Tech, 151-102. The capacity crowd in the Rec Center Pool saw six facility records fall in the 14-event meet.
200 Medley Relay
In the day's first event, the Tribe's 200 medley relay team of
Sidney Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.),
Ben Ward (Maitland, Fla.),
Andrew Strait (Henrico, Va.), and
Stephen Fay (Herndon, Va.) swam the fourth-fastest time ever at W&M of 1:32.37. The performance was a season-best by nearly a second.
200 Free
Stephen Fay was back in the pool soon after, collecting the day's first win with a 1:41.43 performance in the 200 free.
50 Free
Also earning a win was
Ben Ward in the 50 free, as he cruised through the water in 21.28 seconds. Junior
Hunter Perrot (Falls Church, Va.) registered a fourth-place showing in the race, stopping the clock in 21.71 seconds.
500 Free
Andrew Strait added a victory of his own in the 500 free, touching the wall in 4:42.35 to take top honors. Freshman
Kemp Pettyjohn (Lynchburg, Va.) was second in 4:45.52, with
Stephen Fay third in 4:49.91 and
Evan Rutherford (Newport News, Va.) placing fourth in 4:56.15.
100 Fly
Senior
Evan Mulloy (Martinez, Ga.) won two events on the afternoon, first in the 100 fly. He touched the wall in 51.74 seconds, ahead of
K.J. Shaw (Richmond, Va.) in 53.44 seconds.
John Rittenhouse (London, England) was next to the wall in 54.64 seconds, with
Michael Polo (Colonial Heights, Va.) rounding out the top four in 55.46 seconds.
200 IM
After the second intermission, it was Mulloy again claiming the gold medal with a 2:00.07 showing in the 200 IM.
K.J. Shaw was again right behind him in 2:00.65, while third and fourth went to
Nick Mason (Ashburn, Va.) and
Jake Maloy (Culpeper, Va.), respectively.
100 Breast
Andrew Strait also picked up a second-place medal in the 100 breaststroke, finishing the race in 57.58 seconds.
100 Free
Just 15 short minutes after his fourth-place time in the 50 free,
Hunter Perrot came back in the 100 and improved dramatically to second place. The junior's time was 47.39 seconds.
100 Back
Sidney Glass also had a third-place showing to his credit, coming in the 100 back where he timed 51.04 seconds.
200 Fly
In addition to his two wins,
Evan Mulloy also picked up a bronze medal earlier in the meet, finishing third in the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.83.
400 Free Relay
The 400 free relay also saw W&M earn a third-place showing, as the team of
Andrew Strait,
Ben Ward,
Hunter Perrot, and
Stephen Fay combined to time 3:07.94.
1,650 Free
Freshman
Lukas Dempsey (New Paltz, N.Y.) impressed in the 1,650 free, timing 16:16.85 for fourth place. Fifth went to
Tyler Poling (Morristown, N.J.), who timed 16:44.40.
200 Breast
In the 200 breast, freshman
Chris Dong (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was fourth overall in 2:12.25, just ahead of classmate
Carter Head (Lynchburg, Va.) in 2:12.59.
200 Back
Lukas Dempsey also earned a top-five showing in the 200 backstroke, finishing fifth in 1:56.43.
William and Mary is back in action next weekend, heading down to Greenville, North Carolina, to take on East Carolina. The meet begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 21st.
