W&M Field Hockey Raises More Than $3,000 for Lung Cancer Research

The Tribe's "Hockey for Hope" Field Hockey Tournament last month raised $1,000 in proceeds for the National Lung Partnership in memory of former field hockey and lacrosse standout Claire Lowrie '81.  Donations from Claire's friends and family, including former teammates and W&M alumni, brought the donation total to over $3,000.

"This is a wonderful tribute to Claire's memory and is a positive response to such a heartfelt loss," noted W&M head field hockey coach (and teammate of Claire's) Peel Hawthorne '80.  "I was especially grateful to have so many members of the Tribe Family from years past and present pull together in this effort.  I want to thank all who participated and let folks know that the Firstgiving website in Claire's honor will remain active and accepting of donations until April of 2013.  I was personally stunned by the facts and figures regarding lung cancer and the disparity of funding for research.  I'm glad we could play a small part in raising awareness and funds."
