Jeltje Loomans Selected to NCAA Singles Championship Field; Doubles Team Named Alternate

Indianapolis, Ind. - Freshman Jeltje Loomans became the sixth William and Mary women's tennis rookie to earn an invitation to the NCAA Singles Championship, while the Tribe doubles team of sophomore Anik Cepeda and freshman Hope Johnson was named an alternate for the NCAA Doubles Championship, the Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee announced on Wednesday. Loomans was the CAA automatic selection to the singles championship, while Cepeda and Johnson were the fifth of nine doubles alternates. Loomans joined a group that includes Kristine Kurth (1991), Julie Shiflet (1992), Lauren Nikolaus (1995), Delphine Troch (1999) and Megan Moulton-Levy (2005) as W&M freshmen to earn a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. The Tribe rookie owns 11 singles wins on the season, including a 9-5 dual-match ledger for the Green and Gold. A Third-Team All-CAA singles selection and a second-team doubles choice, Loomans notched an impressive win over No. 27-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh of Virginia during the teams' dual-match earlier this season. The Tribe freshman has been on a roll as a of late winning nine of her last 12 matches, including both matches in the CAA semifinals and championship in helping the College to its 21st league crown.

The 64-player NCAA Singles Championship is slated to start with the first round on May 25 at 10 a.m. The championship match will be May 30 at 2 p.m. Automatic qualification into the Division I singles championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles players ranked in the ITA top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA top 125 eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a record of a minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic qualifier or an at-large selection.

Cepeda and Johnson (pictured right) tallied 12 doubles wins this season, including five against nationally ranked competition. The No. 43-ranked Tribe tandem is 3-2 against the doubles field of 32 with wins over Virginia's No. 20-ranked duo of Eimly Fraser and Hana Tomlijanovic, Duke's No. 16-ranked team of Ellah Nze and Nadine Fhoum and the No. 21-ranked pair of Kathryn Talbert and Kayla Duncan from Wake Forest. Cepeda and Johnson, who were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on three occasions this year, were named to the All-CAA first team and have been ranked as high as No. 30.

The CAA Champion Tribe, which is ranked No. 43 nationally, opens NCAA Tournament play against Ivy League Champion and No. 30 Yale on Saturday, May 14, in Durham, N.C.
