Freshman Jeltje Loomans
became the sixth William and Mary
women's tennis rookie to earn an invitation to the NCAA Singles Championship,
while the Tribe doubles team of sophomore
Anik Cepeda
and freshman
Hope Johnson
was named an alternate for the NCAA Doubles Championship, the Division I Women's
Tennis Subcommittee announced on Wednesday. Loomans was the CAA
automatic selection to the singles championship, while Cepeda and Johnson were
the fifth of nine doubles alternates. Stanford University will
host the NCAA Championships at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., as the individual championships will be held May 25-30.
Loomans joined a group that includes Kristine Kurth (1991), Julie
Shiflet (1992), Lauren Nikolaus (1995), Delphine Troch (1999) and Megan
Moulton-Levy (2005) as W&M freshmen to earn a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. The Tribe rookie owns 11 singles wins on the season,
including a 9-5 dual-match ledger for the Green and Gold. A Third-Team All-CAA
singles selection and a second-team doubles choice, Loomans notched an impressive
win over No. 27-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh of Virginia during
the teams' dual-match earlier this season. The Tribe freshman has been on a roll as a of late
winning nine of her last 12 matches, including both matches in the CAA
semifinals and championship in helping the College to its 21st league crown.
The 64-player NCAA Singles Championship is slated to start with the first round on May 25 at 10 a.m. The championship match will be May 30 at 2 p.m. Automatic qualification into the Division I singles
championships is awarded to any conference with one or more eligible singles
players ranked in the ITA top 125 for eligible/entered singles players. For
conferences with more than one singles player within the ITA top 125
eligible/entered singles players, the subcommittee will apply the NCAA
selection criteria to determine which student-athlete is the automatic
qualifier from those conferences. All singles players must have a record of a
minimum of 13 completed singles matches in order to be selected as an automatic
qualifier or an at-large selection.
Cepeda and Johnson (pictured right) tallied 12 doubles wins this season, including five against nationally
ranked competition. The No. 43-ranked Tribe tandem is 3-2 against the doubles field of 32
with wins over Virginia's No. 20-ranked duo of Eimly Fraser and Hana
Tomlijanovic, Duke's No. 16-ranked team of Ellah Nze and Nadine Fhoum and the
No. 21-ranked pair of Kathryn Talbert and Kayla Duncan from Wake Forest. Cepeda
and Johnson, who were named the CAA Doubles Team of the Week on three
occasions this year, were named to the All-CAA first team and have been ranked as high as
No. 30.
The CAA Champion Tribe, which is ranked No. 43 nationally,
opens NCAA Tournament play against Ivy League Champion and No. 30 Yale on
Saturday, May 14, in Durham, N.C. The match is slated for a 9 a.m. start time
with the host and No. 3 seeded Duke Blue Devils facing Atlantic
10 Champion Richmond in the other first round match up at noon. Tickets for the
event are $5 for adults and $3 for students/seniors and can be purchased online

(3853). The winner of the regional will earn a spot in the NCAA Round of 16, beginning May 19, in Stanford, Calif.
