CAA CHAMPIONS: Tribe Surges Past Georgia State for Program's 21st League Crown

Norfolk, Va. - On Sunday afternoon, the William and Mary women's tennis team found itself in the same spot as last season's CAA Championship match, trailing 1-0 after dropping the doubles point and needing four singles wins to claim the league crown. After falling to VCU in a 4-3 heartbreaker in 2010, the Tribe did not let a similar fate come to fruition this season, taking control in singles play on the way to a 4-2 victory over No. 3-seeded and No. 65-ranked Georgia State at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The College won its 21st (out of a possible 26) CAA Championship and earned College's 18th bid to the NCAA Tournament. W&M improved to 16-8 on the year with its seventh straight win.

Trailing 1-0 after dropping the initial point of the match in doubles competition, freshman Jeltje Loomans quickly evened thing with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Maryna Kozachenko at the No. 3 singles post. The Tribe rookie continued her stellar play over the latter part of the season, winning for the fourth time in her last five matches. She won both her singles affairs at the CAA Championships and won for the 11th time on the year.

Sophomore Marlen Mesgarzadeh continued her singles tear with another dominating showing at the No. 2 singles slot. Controlling play from the outset, the two-time First-Team All-CAA choice breezed past Tereza Lerova, 6-2, 6-2, for her second win of the CAA Championships. Mesgarzadeh upped her ledger to 13-9, including an outstanding 8-1 at the No. 2 post. She won her sixth straight contest and for the 10th time of her last 11 matches.

After the Panthers pulled even with a singles win at the top spot, senior Lauren Sabacinski inched the Tribe closer to the CAA crown with a straight-set win at the No. 5 singles slot. She jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on the way to claiming the first set, 6-1, over Kir Kemp. In the second, Sabacinski won three of the final four games on the way to a 6-3 triumph, her fourth straight win. The Plantation, Fla., native, who was a member of CAA Championship teams in her first two seasons with the Tribe, improved to 8-3 overall on the year, including a 4-1 mark at the No. 5 slot.

With the Tribe leading 3-2, sophomore Anik Cepeda put the wraps on the program's 21st league title with a straight-set win at the No. 4 slot. The Second-Team All-CAA honoree took the opening set, 6-3, before racing out to a 4-1 advantage in the second on the way to a 6-3 match-clinching win over Katerina Gresova. Cepeda continued her red-hot play, winning for the third time at the CAA Championships and for the 11th time in her last 12 matches. She won her seventh straight match in improving her team-best ledger to 26-13.

In doubles play, Sabacinski and Loomans upped their winning streak to 11 matches, overcoming an early break to down Kemp and Martina Ondrackova at the No. 3 post and give W&M the early doubles advantage. The GSU squad fought off four match points, before the Green and Gold tandem put the match away with a break in the 14th game for an 8-6 victory. The pair upped its season mark to an impressive 12-1 for the College. The Panthers rallied though to take the initial point of the match with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 posts.

Having earned the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Tribe will await the draw for the 2011 Division I Team Championship, which will take place on Tuesday, May 3. The NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Individual Championships fields will be announced on Wednesday, May 4.
