W&M Men's Track and Field Piles Up Seven IC4A Qualifications on First Day of Colonial Relays

The William and Mary men's track and field team went into the lockers after a very successful first day at the Colonial Relays Friday night with seven IC4A qualifications, two USAT&F Junior qualifications, and one event title.  Bucknell leads the team race with 67 points so far, ahead of Temple (38) and Harvard (33).  The Tribe is tied with Pittsburgh for eighth out of 29 teams, with 21 total points.

Javelin Throw
The Tribe's first notable performance and qualifying mark came in the javelin, where junior Brandon Heroux (Westfield, N.J.) won his third-straight Colonial Relays title with a throw of 67.55 meters (221-7).  It was the sixth-longest throw in school history, and qualified Heroux for the IC4A Championships.  He is the first man since Obra Hogans of Seton Hall to win three-straight titles in the same event (2001-03, 200m dash).  Looking ahead to next year, he will look to join John Kellogg (steeplechase, 1987-90), Dick Drescher (discus, 1970-74) and Joe Zelezniak (shot put, 1979-84) as the only men to win the same event four years in a row or more.

5,000m Run
W&M again showed its distance dominance in the 5,000m, with five harriers coming in under the IC4A qualifying standard and two more qualifying for the USAT&F Junior Championships.  Redshirt-freshman Josh Hardin (Sterling, Va.) led the way in sixth place, cutting more than 42 seconds off of his previous-best to run 14:18.82.  Alex McGrath (Marlborough, N.H.) was seventh in 14:20.90, a 16-second personal-best, and freshman Ted Richardson (Midlothian, Va.) made his 5,000m debut in 14:22.66 for eighth-place.  John Muller (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) chopped more than 37 seconds off of his previous-best to finish ninth in 14:23.32, and senior Ben Massam (Chatham, N.J.) rounded out the IC4A qualifiers in 14:27.05 for 13th.  True freshman Rad Gunzenhauser (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was more than a minute faster than he ever had been before in running 14:45.21 to qualify for USAT&F Juniors, and was joined in qualifying by Joshua Mercado (Citrus Heights, Calif.) , who ran 14:51.36 in his first 5,000m race.

400m Hurdles
In the 400m hurdles, senior Chris McIntosh (Owings Mill, Md.) ran his second-fastest time ever to take fifth in 53.62, and qualified for the IC4A Championships in the process.

High Jump
In the championship section of the high jump, sophomore Ben Katz (Manakin-Sabot, Va.) overcame cold and windy conditions to top the bar at 1.94m (6-4.25), tying for fourth-place.

110m Hurdles
Junior Matt Clark (Richmond, Va.) will run in Saturday's finals in the 110m hurdles, after taking 11th place Friday in the prelims.  Clark ran 15.43 seconds despite a headwind of 1.7 meters per second to advance.

The Colonial Relays continue Saturday with seven relay championships, in addition to half of the scheduled field events.  Saturday will also the individual finals for the 100m dash and 110m hurdles, while the 3,000m run makes its Relays debut after a 49-year wait.
