Tribe Falls to No. 56 Princeton

Williamsburg, Va. - The No. 47 William and Mary women's tennis team fell at home to No. 56 Princeton on Friday afternoon. In a match that was much closer than the final result would indicate, the College dropped a hotly contested doubles point after winning at the No. 2 slot to open things. In singles action, the College forced a trio of three-set matches, but could not break through to the win column in dropping a 7-0 decision. W&M fell to 6-5 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 6-5.

Playing together for the first time this season, the Tribe sophomore tandem of Anik Cepeda and Marlen Mesgarzadeh rolled to an 8-0 win over Monica Chow and Katherine Flanigan at the No. 2 doubles post to give the College the early advantage. The Tigers bounced back though winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions by narrow 8-6 scores to claim the first point of the match.

In singles action, the Green and Gold rallied to forced third sets at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. At the top spot, freshman Hope Johnson dropped the opening set, 6-3, to Hillary Bartlett before bouncing back with a 6-2 victory in the second. The decisive third set went to a tiebreaker with Barlett edging the Tribe rookie, 7-6 (5).

At the No. 4 post, Cepeda rallied from a set deficit with a 7-6 victory in the second against Princeton's Monica Chow. In third set super tiebreaker, Chow pulled out a narrow 10-8 victory. Junior Katie Kargl suffered a similar fate as her teammates, dropping the first set, 6-1, to Flanigan. After Kargl bounced back with a 6-3 win the second, her Tiger foe claimed the match with a 6-2 victory in the third.

The Tribe will host instate rival and No. 8-ranked Virginia on Saturday, March 5. The match is slated for an 11 a.m. start at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.
