Cambridge, Mass. - The William and Mary women's tennis team wrapped up a Boston
sweep with a thrilling 4-3 win over No. 68 Harvard on Saturday afternoon at the
Murr Center. One day after cruising past No. 67 Boston University, freshman
Jeltje Loomans clinched the Green and Gold victory with a come-from-behind
three-set win at the No. 2 singles position. The
Tribe improved to 6-4 on the year with the victory, while Harvard fell to 3-6.
W&M jumped out to the early lead thanks to doubles wins
at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Playing together for the first time this season,
sophomore Marlen Mesgarzadeh and junior Katie Kargl rolled to an 8-2 victory
over Natalie Blosser and Holly Cao at the No. 2 post. Mesgarzadeh and Kargl
improved to 5-2 as a team over the last two seasons. Senior Lauren Sabacinski
and freshman Jeltje Loomans, who were also playing together for the first time
in 2011, won at the No. 3 slot, 8-3, over Samantha Rosekrans and
Hannah Morrill.
In singles action, Kargl and freshman Marivick Mamiit
recorded straight-set wins at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, respectively, to
pull W&M within a singles victory of the team triumph. Kargl upped her
dual-match ledger to 8-2 with her 12th victory of the season in
downing Blosser, 6-2, 6-3. Mamiit won for the sixth time on the year and evened
her dual-match ledger at 4-4 with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory over Alexandra Lehman.
Loomans won for the second time in as many days to capped
the W&M victory as the Green and Gold knocked off a higher ranked opponent for the second
straight day. Playing at the No. 2 singles position for the first time in her
career, Loomans found herself in an early hole as Hideko Tachibana took the
opening set, 6-4. The Tribe rookie rallied to push the match to a decisive
third set with a 7-5 win in the second. Loomans gave W&M its fourth 4-3
victory of the season with a 6-4 triumph in the final set. It marked her fourth
singles win of the year.
The Tribe returns home for a pair of matches, March 4-5. The
Green and Gold welcomes #38 Princeton to Williamsburg on Friday, March 4, at
