W&M Women's Swimming Wins Three of Four at CAA Pod Meet

The William and Mary women's swimming team turned in a dominating performance this weekend at the Colonial Athletic Association Pod Meet hosted by George Mason, beating three of its four opponents and showing better against the fourth than any other team.  The Tribe earned wins over host George Mason (214-126) as well as Northeastern (183-164) and Old Dominion (191-150), while falling to James Madison (204-141) by a smaller margin than any of the other teams.

200 Medley Relay
The weekend started Friday afternoon with the 200 medley relay, where the team of Gabrielle Mizerak (Manassas, Va.), Molly Emery (Burke, Va.), Liza McDevitt (Jenkintown, Pa.), and Sara Shaner (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) timed 1:36.68 to finish second.  Shaner made up more than a second's worth of time on her anchor leg, and nearly put the Tribe into first.  AS it was, the team's time of 1:36.68 is the 10th-best ever recorded at the College.  The quartet of Gabby Famularo (Virginia Beach, Va.), Kristin Fimian (Oakton, Va.), Kelly Fini (Manassas, Va.), and Katie Thomas (Virginia Beach, Va.) also showed very well, taking fifth in 1:40.74.

200 Individual Medley
Molly Emery was back on the blocks almost immediately, and took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.97.

50 Free
Sara Shaner also claimed a bronze medal of her own on Friday afternoon, taking third in the 50 free with a time of 24.41 seconds.

1,650 Free
The Tribe milers turned in a terrific set of performances in the 1,650 free, highlighted by Caylyn Tate's (Sterling, Va.) second-place time of 17:14.41.

400 Medley Relay
Friday's session came to a close with another top-10 all-time performance in the 400 medley relay.  Freshman Liz Glenn (Greenwood Village, Colo.) led-off the College's top squad with a backstroke-leg of 58 seconds flat, placing her eighth in the Tribe's record books.  Classmate Liz Collins (Alexandria, Va.) followed her in the pool, and handed off in turn to Gabrielle Mizerak and Sara Shaner to finish the relay with a time of 3:53.14, good for third place on the night.

200 Free
Molly Emery wasted no time Saturday morning in proclaiming a new order to the meet, winning the day's first event with a time of 1:52.31 in the 200 free.  The time added four victories to her season total, which now stands at 10 wins through the fall.

100 Fly
Gabrielle Mizerak was caught up in a blanket finish to the 100 fly, taking fourth with a time of 58.27 seconds.

100 Back
Liz Glenn erased her own mark from the record books in the open 100 back, timing 57.39 seconds to improve to seventh in school history.  Her performance was second on the day, just barely behind the winning time of 57.31 seconds.  Sammie Cooper (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) was fourth in the event, touching the wall in 58.74 seconds.

400 Individual Medley
In the 400 IM, freshman Brodde Lamb (Charlottesville, Va.) took home the laurels with a winning time of 4:27.48 for four wins of her own.  Her first collegiate attempt at the distance was the fifth-fastest ever for a Tribe athlete.

200 Medley Relay
The medley quartet of Liz Glenn, Liz Collins, Gabrielle Mizerak, and Sara Shaner picked up its second bronze of the weekend in the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:47.23 for third place.

500 Free
The distance team was again on display as the meet resumed after a short lunch break with the 500 free.  Junior Caylyn Tate again led the way for the Tribe, finishing fourth with a season-best time of 5:02.82.

200 Back
After being narrowly edged in the 100 back earlier in the day by Northeastern's Anna Schegoleva, Liz Glenn led wire-to-wire in the 200 back with a win in 2:02.77.  Her time, beating the field by .17 seconds, also improved the freshman to third all-time at the College.  Classmate Katie Thomas was fifth in the race, touching the wall in 2:07.30.

100 Free
Sara Shaner was one of two Tribe athletes on the podium in the 100 free, taking second in 52.56 seconds.  Molly Emery was just barely behind her, finishing third with a time of 52.58 seconds.

200 Breast
The freshman duo of Brodde Lamb and Liz Collins finished back-to-back in the 200 breast, with Lamb taking third in 2:24.66, and Collins finishing fourth in 2:25.10.

400 Free Relay
The final event of the weekend brought the Tribe's third relay bronze medal, with the team of Molly Emery, Liza McDevitt, Katie Thomas, and Jen Bentley (Jamestown, N.Y.) finishing third in the 400 free relay in 3:33.93.

William and Mary now has two weeks off to prepare for its final meet of the fall, the Terrapin Cup Invitational.  The three-day event on November 17-19 will pit the Tribe against teams that in the past have included Maryland, Villanova, Connecticut, Towson, and similar-level competition.
