The William and Mary men's swimming team hit the road for its first meet away from home this season, falling at Davidson 161-127. The Tribe is now 2-1 on the year, while the Wildcats improved to 1-2 overall.
1000 Free
The Tribe's first victory of the afternoon came in the 1000 free, where freshman
Kemp Pettyjohn (Lynchburg, Va.) continued his his hot streak to start the season with a win in 9:40.22. Classmate
Lukas Dempsey (New Paltz, N.Y.) was third in the race, touching the wall in 9:56.88.
200 Fly
Senior
Evan Mulloy (Martinez, Ga.) earned his third victory in as many meets with a winning turn in the 200 fly, touching the wall in a seasons-best time of 1:57.53. Next to the line was junior
K.J. Shaw (Richmond, Va.), finishing in 1:59.33.
50 Free
Junior
Ben Ward (Maitland, Fla.) earned the first of his two wins on the day in the 50 free, cruising to victory in 21.71 seconds. Classmate
Hunter Perrot (Falls Church, Va.) was a quarter-second back, taking third in 21.96 seconds.
400 Free Relay
The Tribe's final win of the day came in the 400 free relay, where the team of
Stephen Fay (Herndon, Va.),
Hunter Perrot,
Luke Robbins (Charlottesville, Va.), and
Ben Ward timed a season-best 3:08.59 for the victory. Joining them on the podium was the team of
Sidney Glass (Mechanicsville, Va.),
Evan Rutherford (Newport News, Va.),
Jake Maloy (Culpeper, Va.), and
Lukas Dempsey, taking third in 3:13.96.
400 Medley Relay
W&M had a second-place finish in each of the other 10 swimming events, led by the 400 medley relay team of
Sidney Glass,
Ben Ward,
Andrew Strait (Henrico, Va.), and
Stephen Fay. The quartet was narrowly edged at the wall, timing 3:25.75 for the silver medal. Finishing third was the combination of
Jake Maloy,
Matt Goetz (Islip, N.Y.),
Evan Mulloy, and
Hunter Perrot.
200 Free
Luke Robbins was second in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.47, and
Stephen Fay took third in the event, completing his laps in 1:45.00 flat.
100 Back
Sidney Glass came back from his leadoff leg on the relay to finish second in the open 100 back as well, finishing in 52.71 seconds.
Jake Maloy was third, touching in a time of 53.32.
100 Breast
In the 100 breast,
Andrew Strait earned the first of three individual silvers on the day with a time of 58.38 seconds.
100 Free
Stephen Fay took silver in the 100 free, where his time of 47.50 seconds was the second-fastest he has swum all season long.
Ben Ward added a third-place finish to his day in 48.26 seconds.
200 Back
Sidney Glass came back in the 200 back for another silver, touching the wall in 1:56.05.
Evan Rutherford added a third-place podium finish to his resume, finishing the course in 1:57.44.
200 Breast
Andrew Strait was back in the pool in the 200 breast, timing 2:12.67.
500 Free
In the 500 free,
Kemp Pettyjohn was part of an all-freshman top-three, finishing second in 4:46.74. All part of the youth movement was
Lukas Dempsey, who took third in 4:54.18.
100 Fly
Second in the 100 fly went to
Evan Mulloy, finishing his swim with a time of 52.93 seconds.
200 IM
The final individual event of the day was also
Andrew Strait's final second-place showing, as he swam 1:55.71 in the 200 IM.
William and Mary returns to the pool next weekend, travelling to Fairfax, Virginia to face Old Dominion and George Mason in the CAA Pod Meet on Friday and Saturday.
