Newport News, Va. - For the 19th time in the 22 years history of the Colonial Athletic Association, the William and Mary women's tennis program claimed the league's championship, defeating No. 26 VCU, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Huntington Park Tennis Center. The College breezed by the second-seeded Rams, taking the doubles point, before dominating in singles. The Tribe claimed wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions to clinch the title, but also led by a set at the other three positions. With the victory, W&M clinches a spot in the NCAA Tournament and improves to 20-2 on the year.
"We are 20-2, and though we have had a good season, we have had our ups and down," head coach Kevin Epley said. "We had never really put it all together with everyone playing at a high level at the same time until today. It was great to see it happen in the CAA Championship. Everyone played well, and I could not be prouder of this team. What a statement to make before the NCAA Tournament. VCU is a very good team. If you could have told me at the start of the year that we would beat them 4-0 in CAA Championship, I would have thought you were crazy. We are a young team, and it is a testament to them. They showed a lot maturity today."
Like they have all season, the Tribe's top doubles pair of senior
Megan Moulton-Levy and sophomore
Katarina Zoricic got things going with a convincing 8-2 victory over the No. 6-ranked VCU duo of Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova. The Rams evened the doubles with a win at the No. 2 spot, leaving the deciding match at the No. 3 position. The Tribe's freshman duo of
Ragini Acharya and
Magdalena Bresson took full advantage for the College, clinching the important opening point with an 8-5 win over Olena Leonchuck and Viktoria Konstantinova.
The Tribe poured it on in singles, claiming the opening set in all six singles affairs. Acharya continued her impressive rookie campaign, downing No. 121 Borisova at the No. 3 position. The Pulaski, Va., native won her 26th straight match, pushing her team-leading win total to 31 with a 6-1, 6-2 over the VCU senior. Kasztelaniec won her third straight and brought the Tribe to within a single victory of the championship with a win at the No. 4 slot. She defeated Konstantinova, 6-4, 6-0.
Bresson did the job at No. 5 to send the Tribe faithful into celebration. The Delray Beach, Fla., native took the opening set, 6-3, but trailed 3-1 early the second. Bresson reeled off five straight games against Leonchuck to clinch the CAA crown for the College.
With its berth in the NCAA Tournament secured, W&M will await its opponent and destination in the NCAA Tournament. The 2007 NCAA Division I women's tennis selection announcements will take place Tuesday, May 1, on ESPNEWS. The women's announcement is slated for 2:45 p.m. and can also be heard on XM Radio and SIRIUS Radio.
