Wilmington, N.C. - The William and Mary men's soccer team topped the Colonial Athletic Association and tied a school-record with five all-league honorees, the conference announced at its annual awards banquet on Thursday night. Sophomore midfielder Nat Baako led the way for the Green and Gold, earning First-Team All-CAA honors, while junior forward
Andrew Hoxie was a second-team selection for the second time in his career. Senior midfielder
Doug McBride and juniors
Roger Bothe and
Price Thomas were all named to the All-CAA third team. It marks the sixth time W&M received five All-CAA selections. The program also accomplished the feat in 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1996.
Baako was one of four sophomores named to the first team. The Accura, Ghana native has started all 39 matches of his Tribe career, and has enjoyed a breakout season statistically in his second campaign. The 5-5 dynamo ranks among the CAA leaders in points (eighth) with 15 and assists (fourth) with five. He has also scored five goals on the season, which is the third-best total on the Tribe. Earlier this season, Baako earned ODU/Stihl Soccer Classic MVP honors, racking up seven points on three goals and an assist in leading W&M to the title at the event. He scored both Tribe goals in a 2-2 tie with 2007 NCAA College Cup Semifinals and Atlantic-10 regular season champion UMass, and was later named CAA Player of the Week. Baako also had a two-assist game in the Tribe's come-from-behind 3-2 double-overtime victory over Atlantic Sun regular season champion Campbell. He provided the helpers on each of the Tribe's last two goals, giving the Camels their last loss of the season on Sept. 23. Baako also has enjoyed success in the classroom this season, earning Second-Team
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III honors.
Despite playing in only 12 of the Tribe's 18 matches and making only six starts due to injury, Hoxie garnered second-team all-league distinction at the forward slot for the second time in his career. The 6-4 striker tops W&M and ranks among the CAA's best in scoring. He has 16 points on six goals and four assists. He ranks sixth in the league in both points and goals. Hoxie's numbers are even more impressive in CAA play as he has 10 points on four goals and two assists while playing in only eight matches. He has been a key force for the College as W&M is 8-2-2 with Hoxie in the lineup compared to just 2-3-1 without him. He has scored or assisted on the game-winning goal in four of those eight wins.
McBride garnered the first conference distinction of his career, while captaining the College to its first 10-win season since 2002. While his numbers are not eye-popping, the Mechanicsville, Va., native is the engine of the Tribe midfield, and his effect on the Green and Gold's success cannot be purely measured in statistics. The fifth-year senior has five points on a goal and three assists from his holding midfield position. He has made everyone of his points count as each of McBride's assists have been of the game-winning variety, while he also scored his first collegiate game-winning goals against Georgia State on Oct. 29.
For the second straight season, Thomas earned All-CAA honors, garnering third team accolades as a junior. The Charlottesville, Va., native was a first-team all-conference honoree last season after leading the Tribe in scoring. This season, Thomas is the CAA leader in assists with six on the year. He also ranks among the league leaders in points per game at just under one per contest. Thomas has added four goals for 14 points this season. He has had his share of moments up front for the Green and Gold in 2008. Thomas scored the game-winning goal just 29 seconds into overtime on a breakaway against George Mason. He also added a double-overtime game-winner vs. Campbell on Sept. 23. In the Tribe's regular season finale against Drexel, Thomas factored in all three W&M goals with a tally and two assists on his way to earning CAA Player of the Week honors.
Bothe received Third-Team All-CAA honors along the back-line for the Green and Gold. Over his first three season in Williamsburg, the Chester, Va., native has started 56 matches out of a possible 58 in the defensive back field. He leads a W&M defense that ranks third in the CAA in shutouts with six. The Tribe defense has been even more impressive over the last four matches with three shutouts in propelling the College to a 3-0-1 ledger. Bothe is also no stranger going forward into the offensive attack. He has five points on a goal and three assists this season. In the Tribe's regular season finale vs. Drexel, Bothe notched his first career game-winning goal on a 12-yard shot to the far post netting with just four seconds remaining in the opening half.
The Green and Gold is seeded No. 2 in the CAA Tournament after posting a 6-4-1 league ledger. For the first time in 12 seasons, the Tribe tallied back-to-back seasons of six or more CAA victories, and owns its highest seed in the league tourney since 2002. W&M will face No. 3 seed George Mason on Friday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m. The 2008 CAA Championship is being hosted by regular season champion UNC Wilmington at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Seahawks open the semifinal round of the tournament against No. 5 seed Northeastern at 5 p.m. on Friday. Mason advanced to the CAA semifinals with a 5-0 win over Hofstra in the quarterfinals. The Patriots have been on a tear as of late, winning five straight matches on their way to posting an 11-6-2 overall mark. The CAA Championship match is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, with winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
