GREENSBORO, N.C.— Battling multiple weather delays, William & Mary track and field completed the opening day of the CAA Championships in Greensboro, N.C. on Wednesday. The Tribe fought through the multiple delays and sit in ideal position heading into tomorrow's final day, with the men in first place and the women third.
The Green and Gold holds a three-point lead over Monmouth on the men's side, while the women trail Elon by 16 and Hampton by one.
W&M's efforts were aided by a sweep of the top spot in both steeplechase events.
Freshman
Collin Walsh snagged the gold and the conference title in the 3000m steeplechase crossing the line for the Tribe's first event win of the meet.
Catherine Garrison followed up Walsh with a victory in the women's side of the 3000m steeplechase to complete the sweep for W&M. Garrison posted a time of 10:20.84 to grab the CAA title by a margin of 13 seconds.
The first medal of the day for the Tribe came at in the javelin thanks to
Alex Ust. Ust posted a mark of 53.57m to earn the runner-up spot and the silver medal for the event.
Lauren Jones found her way to the podium on Wednesday in the long jump. Jones posted a mark of 5.80m, good for third place and the fourth best performance in W&M history.
Jacqueline Jones brought some excitement following afternoon weather delays for the Tribe, setting the program record in the 100m with a time of 11.62. The effort earned her not only a spot in the record books but a trip to Thursday's final in the event.
Jonathan Kumer was the fastest of all the qualifiers in the men's 800m, posting a time of 1:52.11 to advance out of the prelims and on to Thursday.
Caleb Wilcox punched his ticket to tomorrow's final in the 1500m. The Tribe freshman crossed the line with a time of 3:53.33 to earn a third-place finish in his heat. He won't be alone on Thursday, as three other teammates also qualified. Luke Henkle (3:54.23),
Brendan DiStefano (3:55.02) and
Henry Anderson (3:55.11) also earned spots in the 12-man final.
Three W&M athletes advanced to the finals on the women's side of the 1500m.
Kyra Holland finished second in her heat with a time of 4:28.15.
Jennifer Tsai was just behind her crossing the line in 4:28.35, while
Kelly Ann Sutterfield will join them in the finals thanks to a time of 4:34.50.
Emily Ervin earned her spot in the women's 400m final thanks to a time of 55.31 on Wednesday. The time is the third best of Ervin's career and ninth best in program history.
Other qualifiers for the finals on Thursday included
Austin Rice (47.78) in the 400m,
David Seekford (54.52) in the 400m hurdles,
Avery Glidden (1:01.10) in the 400m hurdles and
Jacqueline Jones (24.15) in the 200m.
