VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Junior sprinter Austin Rice put together another record-setting weekend at the Virginia Beach Sports Center, notching an individual school record in the 400m while helping the 4x400m relay team to the best finish in school history at the East Coast Invitational.

The Tribe had a litany of standout individual performers, with seven new top-10 marks and a couple event winners to boot.

FRIDAY
The W&M women saw three highlight performances in the 60m prelims. Lauren Jones (7.67) and Melissa Cunningham (7.70) both narrowly missed out on personal records but were still able to score individual top-10 marks in school history. Summer Mellow did earn a new PR, clocking in at 7.72 as she moved into a tie for fourth place on the all-time list.

Rice stole the show in the men's 400m, winning the event with a school-record time of 47.69. He had previously set the record at the Navy Invitational in December, beating his previous PR by 0.53 seconds.

On the women's side of the 400m, Emily Ervin was the Tribe's top performer in a crowded event with a final time of 56.55.

In the men's 800m, Jonathan Kumer placed first with his time of 1:49.14. That personal record moved him into second in school history, bested only by Anders Christiansen's mark in 1999 (1:47.19).

In the field events, the Tribe pole vaulting duo of Elizabeth Strobach and Olesya Sitkowski finished one and two, respectively, in the event. Strobach put together a personal-best vault of 12'10.25" (3.92m) that stands as fourth-best in program history. Sitkowski topped out at 12'8.25" (3.87m) to finish runner-up.

Mellow added another top-10, this time in the long jump, with her leap of 18'8.25" (5.70m) that ranks sixth-best ever.

SATURDAY
Running in the prelims of the women's 60m hurdles, Katriel Amoyaw posted a time of 9.07. That was good enough for another top-10, ranking sixth.

In the women's 200m, Cunningham won her heat and placed 15th in a competitive field with a time of 24.86.

The men's 4x400m relay team was the highlight of the day, however, as Rice teamed up with Jacob Robinson, David Seekford, and Charlie Bestic to finish in 3:13.23 for a school record. The previous indoor record had stood since 2019 and was beat out by 1/100th of a second.

UP NEXT
The Tribe returns to Lynchburg, Va. for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational next Friday, Feb. 14. The festivities at Liberty will get underway at 1 p.m., with select events broadcasted on ESPN+.
