Johnathan Grimes ended his career as one of the most prolific players in W&M's long football history.

As a freshman, he was named Honorable Mention All-American at Kick Returner by both the Sports Network and College Sporting News, while the latter organization also named him as its National Rookie of the Year.  In 2011, his senior year, Grimes was named first-team All-American at running back by the Associated Press and College Sporting News; and second-team All-American by Sports Network and Phil Steele.

He played for some of the most successful teams in school history.  As a sophomore in 2009, Grimes helped the Tribe to an 11-3 overall record and an NCAA Semifinals appearance by rushing for 1,294 yards and 9 TDs, while adding 46 catches for another 289 yards.  The following year, he was a big part of the team's 2010 CAA Championship season that led to a first-round bye in the 2010 NCAA Postseason.

A dynamic player, Grimes was named the Special Teams Player of the Year by the CAA in both 2010 and 2011 and earned the CAA Rookie of the Year honors in 2008.   Additionally, he earned All-CAA recognition as both running back (2nd in 2008, 1st 2009-10-11) and returner (1st in 2008, 2nd in 2010, 3rd in 2009 and 2011) all four years of his career and graduated with the most post season honors in CAA history.

Grimes was also tabbed as the East Coast Athletic Conference's (ECAC) Rookie of the Year in 2008 and earned All-ECAC recognition at running back in 2008 and 2011.

He is the school's career record holder in rushing attempts and yards (936 attempts for 4,541 yards) and ranks fourth in school history with 34 career rushing touchdowns.  He set the school's single season rushing record for attempts (288) and yards (1,431) as a senior is 2011.

His 2009 and 2011 seasons stand as the only two in school history to see a player eclipse the 2,000-yard mark in all-purpose yards – and his career total of 7,955 all-purpose yards is 3,000 yards more than the next closest player on the Tribe's all-time listing.

Grimes also holds career record for kickoff return years with 2,289 (500 yards more than the next highest) and has three games of over 200 yards rushing (out of seven total in school history).  He also holds seven of the top 10 highest single game all-purpose yardage totals in school history.  He ended his career with 17 career 100-yard rushing games, the second-most in school history.

Signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent ahead of the 2012 NFL season, Grimes went on to fashion a six-year NFL career that also included stops with the NY Jets and the Jacksonville Jaguars.  He ended with a total of 619 rushing yards with two touchdowns, and 436 receiving yards with a touchdown.
