Women's Swimming Sets Five Dual-Meet School Records in Season-Opening Quad Meet

HAMPTON, Va. – William & Mary swimming set five dual-meet school records and 11 times that rank among the Tribe's all-time top 16 lists in the season-opening quad meet at the Hampton Aquaplex on Saturday afternoon.
 
The women's program went 2-1 on the afternoon with CAA wins over UNCW, 160-133, and Delaware, 157-137. George Washington handed the Tribe its lone loss on the women's side in narrow fashion, 151.5-141.5. UNCW (219.5-70.5), George Washington (216-77) and Delaware (218-75) each posted wins over the Tribe men's team.
 
Junior Lindsay Juhlin set two individual school dual-meet records in winning the 100 breaststroke (1:01.88) and finishing second in the 100 butterfly (53.50). Freshman Tess Lankford established a new program dual-meet record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.59 to finish second.
 
The Tribe women's program set school dual-meet records in the 200 medley relay to start the day and 400 free relay to end it. Sophomore Julie Addison, senior Ellie Scherer, Juhlin, and junior Caroline Burgeson won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:39.54, while sophomore Sarah Dunham, Burgeson, freshman Healey Morgan, and sophomore Flynn Truskett won the 400 free relay at 3:23.59.
 
Burgeson added the other Tribe win on the women's side, finishing first in the 100 freestyle.  
 
In total, the Tribe captured 32 top-five performances between the men's and women's programs in the quad meet. Sophomore Aiden Bond led the way for the Tribe men's team, finishing second in both the 50 and 100 freestyles.
 
200 Medley Relay
The Tribe's top two relays actually bettered the program's dual-meet record in the 200 medley. The winning time of 1:39.54 from Addison, Scherer, Juhlin, and Burgeson was also the third-fastest mark overall in school history. W&M's B relay of Dunham, senior Natalia Rongione, junior Sophia Heilen, and Truskett finished fifth in a time of 1:41.84. The time ranks 16th in school history. The previous school record mark of 1:42.26 came last season against UNCW.
 
The men's top 200 medley relay quartet of sophomore David Yune, junior Brock Rempe, junior Rhett Cosgrove, and Bond finished fourth on the afternoon. The group's time of 1:28.90 ranks 14th in Tribe history.
 
1,000 Freestyle
Sophomore Lauren Tucker and senior Devin Genderson turned in top-five performance in the women's 1000 free. Tucker swam a 10:18.12 to finish third, while Genderson was fifth (10:32.63).
 
On the men's side, freshman Jackson Mueller led the way, placing sixth in a time of 9:43.31.
 
200 freestyle
Lankford and sophomore Meghan Benda placed second and third, respectively, in the 200 free for the Tribe women's team. Lankford posted a time of 1:51.79 just ahead of Benda's 1:52.49.
 
On the men's side, sophomore Ian Cullcot posted the Tribe's top finish in sixth behind a time of 1:41.03.
 
100 Backstroke
Addison and Dunham both finished in the top five in the 100 backstroke. Addison was fourth in a time of 55.88, which was just .16 shy of her career-best set last season at the CAA Championships. Dunham posted a fifth-place performance in a time of 56.19. The mark placed her 13th on the Tribe's school record performer list.
 
100 Breaststroke
Like it did in the 200 medley relay, two Tribe times were faster than the previous school dual-meet record. Juhlin took gold in a time of 1:01.88, which was the ninth fastest time in school history and moved her up to third on the all-time performer's list. She topped the previous school record held by Scherer, who finished third on Saturday in a time of 1:02.29. Scherer set the school record mark last season at 1:03.23 vs. Loyola Maryland.
 
On the men's side, Rempe took third in a time of 54.91. Junior Logan McDonald, who holds the program record in the event, was sixth at 55.90.
 
200 Butterfly
Junior Lauren Klinefelter and Heilen posted top-five finishes in the 200 butterfly. The pair posted times just .26 seconds apart with Klinefelter coming in fourth (2:02.31) followed by Heilen in fifth (2:02.57).
 
50 Freestyle  
Burgeson added a third-place finish for the Tribe in the 50 free at 23.40. Trusket came in fifth in the event at 23.66.
 
Bond earned runner-up honors on the men's side, posting a time of 20.17.
 
100 Freestyle
Burgeson posted a career-best mark, moving up to 10th on the Tribe's all-time performers list in the 100 free. She won the event in the a time of 50.64, cutting .06 seconds off her previous best from last year's CAA Championships.
 
Dunham and Turskett gave W&M three swimmers in the top four. Dunham took third at 51.18 just .02 seconds ahead of her teammate.
 
For the men, Bond narrowly missed setting a dual-meet school record to finish second in the event. His time of 44.23 was just .09 seconds shy of Colin Wright's record mark against Davidson in 2020
 
200 Backstroke
Junior Bryce Rouzie and freshman Thomas Duncan notched top-five finishes in the 200 backstroke. Rouzie was fourth in a time of 1:48.36 just ahead of Duncan's 1:48.91.
 
200 Breaststroke
Heilen, Scherer and freshman Claire Neilly each finished in the top five in the 200 breaststroke. Heilen finished second in a time of 2:16.72, one spot in front of Scherer's time of 2:17.59. Neilly rounded out the group, placing fifth in a time of 2:18.62.
 
500 Freestyle
Tucker added a second top-three performance in the distance events, placing second in the 500 free. Her time of 4:56.93 was just shy of her career-best mark of 4:55.09 set at last season's CAA Championships. Junior Kelsey Katt gave W&M two in the top five of the 500 free, finishing fifth at 5:03.21.
 
100 Butterfly
Juhlin claimed second in the 100 butterfly. Her time of 53.50 was the eighth-fastest mark in school history and just 0.4 seconds shy of her career best. It broke her previous dual-meet school record mark to 54.78 set in January vs. Georgetown.
 
Klinefelter and sophomore Clara Bodnar finished fourth (55.19) and sixth (55.52), respectively in the event.
 
200 IM
Lankford and Scherer each finished in the top five in the 200 IM. Lankford's time of 2:02.59, good for fourth place, eclipsed Heilen's previous dual-meet record of 2:03.62 set last year against UNCW. She now ranks as the eighth-fastest performer in school history.
 
Scherer also topped the previous school-record dual-meet mark, placing fifth in the time of 2:03.23.
 
400 Free Relay
Dunham led off the 400 freestyle relay in a career-best time of 50.79, which moved her up to 12th on the Tribe's career performers list in the 100 free. Burgeson, Morgan and Truskett helped the Tribe set a dual-meet school record, winning the event in a time of 3:23.59, which is the 15th-best time overall in school history. The group broke the previous school-record mark of 3:24.90 set vs. Old Dominion in 2021.
 
Up Next
The Tribe heads to Annapolis, Md., next week to face Navy and UMBC in a tri-meet. The event is slated to start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12.
