Swimming Combines for 20 Event Wins, Women Down Wildcats

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Combining for 20 event wins and 43 top-three finishes, William & Mary men's and women's swim teams made an impressive showing at Davidson on Saturday afternoon.

The Tribe women secured their sixth win of the season, improving to 6-1, with a 175-119 victory over the Wildcats. On the men's side, despite the Tribe's eight event wins and 20 podium finishes, Davidson's diving events gave the Wildcats the slight edge over the visitors, 154-134.

Four of the Tribe women won a pair of individual events as Sophia Heilen and Ellie Scherer were joined by freshmen Sarah Dunham and Lauren Tucker to account for eight of the women's 12 victories.

Lauren Klinefelter earned a win and a second-place finish and Meghan Rourke made a pair of podium appearances, both Klinefelter and Rourke also swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay team.

The freshman duo of Aiden Bond and David Yune combined for four of the men's team's individual wins. Bond added a win with the 200 Free Relay and Yune captured a top-three finish in the 200 Free.

Logan McDonald led the charge in the 100 Fly as the men's team went 1-2-3 in the event, joined by Gavin Lamoureux and Kent Codding. McDonald made a pair of top-two finishes and swam on both winning relay teams. Lamoureux and Alex Valliere also swam on both relays and each made a podium finish individually.

The meet opened with a pair of winning relays as the women's team of Julie Addison, Lindsay Juhlin, Klinefelter and Rourke posted a 1:46.30 time and the men's team of Aaron Tingley, McDonald, Lamoureux and Valliere swam a 1:32.83 in the 200 Medley Relay.

Tucker secured one of her two victories with a 10:19.44 finish in the 1000 Free.

Dunham led the 200 Free with a 1:54.71 finish.

Yune's 1:43.83 time in the 200 Free was good for a third-place finish on the men's side.

Kat Vanbourgondien earned a victory in the 100 Back as she touched the wall in 57.29.

Micah Lowe and Tingley took two of the top-three spots in the 100 Back for the men, as Lowe posted a 51.98 finish and Tingley had a 52.24 time.

Scherer took first place in the women's 100 Breast with a time of 1:04.34 and Juhlin secured a second-place finish with her time of 1:05.28.

Brock Rempe and McDonald took the top two spots in the men's 100 Breast as Rempe posted a time of 56.67 and McDonald swam a 57.19.

Heilen's blistering 2:05.91 time in the 200 Fly topped the event and Klinefelter took second place with a 2:08.01 finish. Taylor Stockard also earned points for the Tribe, finishing fourth in the event.

Rourke earned a podium finish in the women's 50 Free, coming in third place with her time of 24.66.

Bond earned his second 50 Free win in as many meets with a 20.86 finish and Valliere made a podium appearance with a third-place time of 21.43. He followed with a win in the next event, topping the 100 Free with his 45.93 finish.

Dunham took her second win of the afternoon with a 52.16 finish in the women's 100 Free and, fellow freshman, Rourke finished second, in 53.44.

In the 200 Back, Addison added an individual podium appearance to join the 200 Medley Relay win, swimming a 2:05.13 for second place.

On the men's side, Yune earned the victory in the 200 Back with a 1:51.72 finish, beating the next-fastest swimmer by nearly three seconds. Bryce Rouzie finished just two tenths of a second behind the second-place swimmer, earning a 1:54.74 mark.

Heilen secured a win in the 200 Breast with a 2:20.15 finish and was joined on the podium with teammate Kaitlyn Conover-Emmert, whose 2:23.50 time earned her a third-place finish. 

Cole Younger finished second in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:06.59 and Jono Bennett finished third with a 2:09.73 time for the Tribe men.

Tucker earned her second distance freestyle win of the meet in the 500 Free, posting a 5:04.07 mark. Kelsey Katt finished in 5:12.09 for a third-place finish and Keirsen Dagg's 5:15.58 finish earned points for the Tribe.

For the men, Will Glass placed third with his 4:46.27 time in the 500 Free.

Klinefelter and Clara Bodnar took the top two spots in the 100 Fly as Klinefelter made a 57.52 time and Bodnar finished in 57.91.

The Tribe men swept the podium in the 100 Fly. McDonald posted his second-best time this season with a 50.98 finish for the win. Lamoureux recorded a 51.11 finish and Codding swam a 51.59 to combine for a 16-point event for the men's team.

Scherer's second win of the afternoon came in the final individual event, as her 2:08.05 time was good for first place in the 200 IM. Juhlin finished less than half a second later with a 2:08.41 finish, taking the runner-up spot.

Yune earned a second individual win with his 1:55.24 time in the men's 200 IM and Younger's 1:56.25 finish secured the second step on the podium.

Two more relay victories capped the meet as the quartet of Caroline Burgeson, Heilen, Zoe Arakelian and Dunham made a 1:36.07 finish in the 200 Free Relay for the women's team. The men's team of Valliere, Bond, Lamoureux and McDonald made a 1:23.83 finish for the final victory of the day.
 
UP NEXT
W&M swimming returns home to wrap up its home schedule against Georgetown on Saturday, Jan. 27th. The meet will feature senior day festivities as the Tribe seniors make their final appearance at the Bee McLeod Rec Center.
