Women's Cross Country Travels to Paul Short Run on Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's cross country returns to action at the Paul Short Run on Saturday, Sept. 30.
 
The Paul Short Run
Saturday marks the 49th running of the Paul Short Run, presented by ASICS, at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The event is once again among the largest in the country, featuring over 450 college and high school teams with over 5,200 competitors. Paul Short Run includes two open races, six college races, and four high school scoring races.  Timing services are being provided by Leone Timing and will utilize live splits and scoring throughout all of the races. The Tribe will have individuals competing in the Women's 6K Open Race at 10:15 a.m. with the team taking part in the Women's College Gold 6K Race at 11:45 a.m.

Parking for the event is $10 (cash preferred, but CC accepted) and fans are encouraged to arrive early. All parking during the event is available in the lots around Stabler Arena and just North of the Goodman Stadium (124 Goodman Drive South, Bethlehem, PA 18015). Other fan information is available at the Paul Short Run Fan FAQ .
 
W&M is one of 39 NCAA Division I programs competing in the Gold 6K Race, including 23 regionally-ranked team. Along with the Tribe, the field includes Army West Point (No. 11 Northeast Region), Belmont (No. 10 South Region), Binghamton, Boston University (No. 7 Northeast Region), Bowling Green, Brown, Bucknell (No. 8 Mid-Atlantic Region), Buffalo, Canisius, Delaware, Fordham, George Mason, George Washington (No. 10 Mid-Atlantic Region), Georgetown (No. 1 Mid-Atlantic Region), Georgia (No. 15 South Region), Georgia Tech (No. 7 South Region), Howard, Lehigh (No. 13 Mid-Atlantic Region), Maryland (No. 11 Mid-Atlantic Region), Mercer, Monmouth, Navy (No. 7 Mid-Atlantic Region), North Dakota, Penn State (No. 4 Mid-Atlantic Region), Purdue Fort Wayne, Quinnipiac (No. 13 Northeast Region), Rhode Island, Rider (No. 15 Mid-Atlantic Region), Rutgers (No. 12 Mid-Atlantic Region), South Carolina, Stony Brook (No. 14 Northeast Region), Temple, UMass Amherst (No. 15 Northeast Region), UMass Lowell (No. 10 Northeast Region), Utah Valley (No. 5 Mountain Region), Wake Forest (No. 6 Southeast Region), West Virginia (No. 2 Mid-Atlantic Region), and Yale (No. 12 Northeast Region). Nationally, Georgetown is ranked No. 11, Utah Valley is No. 24, and both Penn State and West Virginia are receiving votes. Other teams competing in the Gold 6K Race is Division II No. 13-ranked Wingate; three Division III top-10 teams in No. 5 SUNY Geneseo, No. 6 Johns Hopkins, and No. 8 Wisconsin-La Crosse; and two Canadian U SPORTS schools in Guelph and Western Ontario.

News and Notes
- W&M is currently ranked No. 12 in the Southeast Region. The Tribe started the year at No. 14 and moved up three spots to as high as No. 11 on Sept. 18.

- The Tribe competes in the Paul Short Run for the third-straight year and the eighth time since 2002. W&M placed among the top five on two occasions, finishing as the runner-up in a 39-team field in 2012 and fourth in 2004.

- Last year, W&M placed 27th in a 46-team field at Paul Short. Sofia Istnick (92nd at 20:48.0) and Arianna DeBoer (99th at 20:52.6) placed among the top 100 to lead the Tribe.

- In its opening two events of the 2023 season, W&M earned runner-up finishes. The Tribe edged No. 11 Georgetown for second at the season-opening Spider Alumni Open behind only No. 11 Virginia. Recently, W&M was second in CAA rival Elon at the Adidas XC Challenge on Sept. 15 in Cary, N.C.

- At the Adidas XC Challenge, the Tribe placed five among the top 30 to finish second in a 13-team field. Junior Arianna DeBoer and sophomore Catherine Garrison led the Tribe, placing 12th (17:38.6) and 15th (17:39.7), respectively. Sophomore Kelly Ann Sutterfield finished in the third spot on the team for the second race in a row, taking 25th (18:17.5). Junior Lucy Young and senior Emily Sell rounded out the Tribe's top five in 26th (18:20) and 30th (18:36.9).

- Sophomore Sofia Istnick was named the CAA Runner of the Week on Sept. 5 after leading the Tribe at the Spider Alumni Open. She placed fourth in the 180-runner field, covering the 4K course in 13:43.2. The Massillon, Ohio native was the CAA Rookie of the Year last season and led W&M with a 44th-place showing at the NCAA Southeast Region Championships.
