RICHMOND, Va. — Fantastic freshman!
Following a phenomenal first spring in Green and Gold,
Jason Nwosu capped off his inaugural year with the Tribe as the CAA Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday.
Named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at this year's CAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Nwosu singlehandedly scored 18 points for William & Mary over the two-day event. The first-year standout not only took gold in the shot put, but also placed fourth in the discus and sixth in the hammer. His winning shot put distance, 16.61m (54-06.00), came on his final throw of the morning and was just shy of his personal best. That throw, 16.81m, ranks seventh all-time at William & Mary and is inches short of the program's freshmen record set in 1983.
And Nwosu wasn't the only Tribe standout racking up postseason accolades, either, as
Daniel Layton and
Stephen Larson also earned All-CAA honors.
For the second straight year, Layton captured gold in the decathlon at CAAs. The senior's 6,640 points weren't only a PR — they were nearly 600 points higher than his previous best. He also set the new school record in the decathlon 110m hurdles, running a 14.75 to top the previous time of 15.01, which was set in 1997. And there was still more. Layton's repeat win was the first for W&M in the decathlon since Phil Agee did it in 2003-2004, while his score was the best for any Tribe athlete since 1997.
Larson also claimed a spot on the podium with a bronze medal time of 1:51.54 in the 800m.
