INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - William & Mary women's tennis is headed to Durham, North Carolina for the 2023 NCAA Division I Championship and faces No. 6 Duke in the opening round, the NCAA announced on Monday.
The Tribe garnered its 25th NCAA appearance thanks to securing the Colonial Athletic Association's automatic bid with the program's 28th league crown on April 23.
The Durham Regional is set for Friday, May 5, and Saturday, May 6, at the Ambler Tennis Stadium. No. 20 UCLA (13-7) and No. 37 Texas Tech (14-10) open play in the regional at 2 p.m. on Friday with W&M taking on the host Blue Devils (22-4) not before 5 p.m. The regional final is set for Saturday at 5 p.m.
W&M and Duke meet for the fourth time in the NCAA Tournament, previously squaring off in the regional round in 2004 and 2008 as well as the round of 16 in 2003. The Tribe travels to the Durham for a regional for the fourth time and the first since 2016. W&M dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 24 Texas during that last visit.
W&M's 25 NCAA Tournament appearances rank 19th nationally and are second-most for a program outside the Power Five Conferences. The Green and Gold owns 21 wins in the NCAA Tournament, which ranks 27th in the country and are the second-best total, behind only Pepperdine (44), for a school from outside the Power Five. The Tribe's best showings at the NCAA Championship came in 1997 and 1998 when it advanced to the quarterfinals.
W&M has won nine of its last 10 entering the NCAA Championship and is 15-5 on the year. The Tribe upended North Carolina A&T, 4-0, Elon, 4-3, and UNCW, 4-0, on its way to its 28th CAA Championship, April 21-23, at the Mackesy Tennis Center.
Tickets for the NCAA First and Second rounds will be $5 plus a $1 processing fee online and at the gate for ages three and up. Ages two and under receive free admission. No cash accepted, only major credit cards. Parking for all fans will be free in the Blue Zone lot.
The winner of the Durham Regional will advance to the Super Regional, which is set for the following weekend at campus sites. The final eight teams move to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., May 17-27, for the championship rounds. This is the first time men's and women's championships for DI, DII and DIII will be at a single site. You can
