WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Lets' call it a pretty good weekend.
For the first time since 2009 the William & Mary women's track & field team captured first place at the Colonial Relays, wrapping up competition on Saturday with 136.50 points. Thirty-three total teams scored in the 57
th iteration of the event, with the Tribe holding a comfortable lead at the top. The next closest squad, Brown, finished in second with 91 points, while Hampton rounded out the top three with 87.
But the Relays win was from all the history the Green and Gold made on the final day of competition.
Two relay teams — 4x100 and 4x400 — broke program records as W&M's sprinters continued to shine in the outdoor season. In the 4x100, the quartet of
Amaya Johnson,
Lizzy Gregory,
Anna Kessler, and
Melissa Cunningham set the new mark with a time of 46.18 while also capturing the Tribe's first-ever win in the event at the Relays. Then, in the final women's race of the day, Johnson, Gregory,
Carly Swierbut, and
Emily Ervin ran a blistering 3:38.53 cutting more than a second off the previous 4x400 record set last season. It also marked the third straight year the Tribe has finished first in the event at the Relays.
With her pair of relay records, Johnson wrapped up her two-day stretch of running with three new entries in the W&M history books—she also set the new 100m mark on Friday.
The Tribe also took time during the day to honor 17 seniors for their accomplishments and dedication to the men's and women's track & field and cross country program.
