Women's Cross Country Tops Regionally-Ranked Foes at Paul Short

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Racing a field that featured six teams either in the national rankings or receiving votes and a total of 32 regionally-ranked squads, William & Mary women's cross country gained valuable experience on Friday afternoon at the Paul Short Run. The Tribe, ranked No. 14 in the Southeast Region this week, topped six regionally-ranked counterparts, including Richmond, who was one spot ahead of W&M in the region.
 
Freshman Sofia Istnick and sophomore Arianna DeBoer led the way for the Green and Gold placing in the top 100. The Tribe lineup for the challenging event featured five true freshmen and five sophomores.
 
As a team, the Tribe finished ahead of Mid-Atlantic regionally-ranked No. 11 Maryland and No. 14 Lehigh, Great Lakes No. 12 Central Michigan and No. 15 Dayton and Northeast Region No. 13 Cornell. No. 12 North Carolina won the event with 63 points just ahead of No. 18 Georgetown (67) and No. 15 Providence (176).
 
Istnick was 94th at the mile mark and stayed consistent throughout leading W&M with a 92nd-place showing in a field of 416. She crossed the line in 20:48.
 
DeBoer closed strong to earn a top-100 finish. She was 144th at the two-mile mark before improving 45 spots over the remainder of the race to finish 99th in a time of 20:52.6.  
 
Freshman Catherine Garrison finished 165th for the Tribe in a time of 21:20.0 followed by sophomore Lucy Young in 218th at 21:35.8.
 
Up Next
The Tribe will once again compete at the Virginia XC23 Invitational in Earlysville, Va., at Panorama Farms. The event is slated for Saturday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m.
