Lax to Conclude Home Slate Against Hofstra on Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team will conclude its home slate when it hosts Hofstra at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
Live stats will be available at TribeAthletics.com, while video of the contest will be streamed on FloLive.

Following the contest, a memorial tree dedication and reception will be held to honor members of the program who have passed away.

A Look at the Tribe
W&M currently owns a 4-10 record and a 0-4 mark in conference play. The Tribe leads the Colonial Athletic Association in ground balls per game (19.7), caused turnovers per game (8.8) and saves per game (10.7), while it ranks second in assists per game (4.9) and third in draw controls per game (14.0). The Tribe's ground balls average ranks eighth nationally.
 
Individually, senior Belle Martire ranks second in the league in points per game (3.7), third in goals per game (2.6) and sixth in assists per game (1.1). Defensively, freshman goalie Elise Palmer leads the CAA in saves per game (10.5), while junior Caroline Donovan is tied for ninth in caused turnovers per game (1.1).
 
A Look at the Pride
Hofstra enters Saturday's game with a 7-7 record overall and a 1-3 mark in conference play. The Pride has lost six of its last seven contests and is coming off an 11-10 overtime setback to Towson in its last outing. Katie Whelan leads the team with 49 points (35g, 14a), while Taylor Mennella has also contributed offensively with 39 points (27g, 12a). Shannon Boyle ranks second in the CAA in draw controls per game (5.2) and tied for third in caused turnovers per game (1.3). Goalie Jess Smith is allowing just 10.5 goals per game and ranks second in the conference with a .488 save percentage.

W&M-Hofstra All-Time Series
Hofstra controls the all-time series, 13-7, and has won the last six matchups. Four of the last eight meetings have been decided in overtime. W&M claimed two of those OT wins (2012, 2013), while HU earned victories in 2016 (10-9) and 2018 (15-14). The programs first met in 1978 – an 18-0 W&M victory.
 
Last Time vs. Hofstra
W&M opened its conference slate with a  14-11 setback at Hofstra on April 5, 2019. Although W&M owned an 11-10 lead following a goal by Belle Martire with 13:39 remaining, Hofstra closed the game with four unanswered goals to secure the victory. Martire and Lauren Russell both scored four goals apiece, while Grace Ahonen added three goals and Starr Howard posted five draw controls.  
 
Last Time Out
W&M fell to No. 11 James Madison, 21-9, at Martin Family Stadium last Saturday. Although the contest was knotted at 5-5 midway through the opening quarter, JMU utilized an 8-1 run to build a 13-6 lead at halftime. W&M struck first following intermission with a goal by Lauren Russell off an assist from Serena Jacobs, but the Dukes scored seven of the next eight goals to secure the win. Russell led W&M with four points (3g, 1a), while Sarah Cipolla also found the back of the cage twice and totaled a team-high seven draw controls.
 
CAA Weekly Honors
Five W&M standouts have combined to garner six weekly honors from the CAA this season. Senior Lauren Russell (Feb. 14) and junior Sarah Cipolla (Feb. 28) were honored as the league's player of the week, while freshmen Serena Jacobs (Feb. 14, March 28), Ainsley Huizenga (Feb. 21) and Sam Van Gieson (March. 21) were named rookie of the week.
 
Record Watch
A number of W&M standouts have moved into, or are closing in on, school single-season top 10 lists this spring. Caroline Hertzberg ranks tied for fourth in draw controls (52), while Sarah Cipolla is seventh (51).
 
Belle Martire's 55 points is just five shy of 10th, while she needs just eight more goals and seven more assists to break into the top 10.
 
Goalie Elise Palmer (147) needs just 10 more saves to tie for 10th.
 
Among W&M's All-Time Best
One of the most productive attackers in school history, Belle Martire currently among the top 10 in school history in career goals (149) and points (182). She currently ranks third in goals and sixth in points.
 
Starr Howard also ranks among the Tribe's best in draw controls and ranks tied for seventh all-time with 109.
