Lax to Host No. 4 Maryland on Saturday

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The William & Mary lacrosse team will square off against a top-10 opponent for the second time this season when it hosts No. 4 Maryland at Martin Family Stadium on Saturday at 1 p.m.

A Look at the Tribe
W&M currently owns a 2-2 record and earned a lopsided 18-11 victory against Old Dominion in its last outing. The Tribe currently leads the Colonial Athletic Association in ground balls per game (19.0) and draw controls per game (15.0), while it ranks second in assists per game (4.25). Individually, senior Belle Martire leads the conference in goals per game (3.75) and points per game (4.50), while freshman goalie Elise Palmer ranks sixth nationally in saves per game (13.0).
 
A Look at the Terps
Ranked fourth nationally, Maryland has won its first four games, including matchups against then-No. 11 Virginia (17-13) and then-No. 7 Florida (18-8). As a team, the Terps rank second nationally in scoring (17.5), fourth in draw controls per game (19.5) and eighth in scoring defense (7.25). Individually, Aurora Cordingley leads the team in goals (18) and points (27), while Shaylan Ahearn and Abby Bosco have totaled 35 and 23 draw controls, respectively.

W&M-Maryland All-Time Series
Maryland leads the all-time series against W&M, 28-6, and has won the last 21 meetings. After meeting seven consecutive seasons between (2011-18), Saturday's game will mark the first meeting since 2018.
 
Last Meeting vs Maryland
W&M outscored top-ranked Maryland by two goals in the second half and held the Terps scoreless during the final 17:42 but fell to the defending national champions, 18-7, in both teams' 2018 season opener at College Park, Md. W&M utilized a balanced attack offensively, as six different players accounted for the team's seven goals.
 
Maryland Connection
W&M Head Coach Colleen Dawson played collegiately at Maryland from 2008-11, helping the Terps to three consecutive ACC Championships and the 2010 NCAA Championship. The scholar-athlete also excelled in the classroom, where she earned ACC Student-Athlete Honor Roll recognition and was a member of the Leadership Group.


 
Versus the Big Ten
W&M owns a 22-59 all-time record versus teams currently in the Big 10 Conference. W&M controls the all-time series against Rutgers (3-0), while it has losing records against Maryland (6-28), Ohio State (1-2) and Penn State (7-24). The Tribe is even in its all-time series with Northwestern (4-4) and Johns Hopkins (1-1) and has never played Michigan.
 
Last Time Out
W&M earned a convincing 18-11 victory against Old Dominion at Martin Family Stadium last Wednesday. Although W&M led by just one goal at halftime, 7-6, the Tribe utilized a 7-0 run to start the third quarter en route to opening up a comfortable 14-6 advantage. Senior Belle Martire scored a season-high seven goals, which ranks tied for the fifth-best performance in school history, with a pair of caused turnovers, a draw control and two ground balls. Junior Sarah Cipolla recorded a career-high eight points (5g, 3a), which ranks tied for seventh in school history, and a team-high seven draw controls with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Cipolla was honored as the CAA Player of the Week following her performance.
 
CAA Weekly Honors
Four W&M standouts have garnered weekly honors from the CAA this season. Senior Lauren Russell (Feb. 14) and junior Sarah Cipolla (Feb. 28) were honored as the league's player of the week, while freshmen Serena Jacobs (Feb. 14) and Ainsley Huizenga (Feb. 21) were named rookie of the week.
 
Tough Competition
Maryland will mark W&M's second top-10 opponent in its last three contests, as it hosted No. 6 Duke on Feb. 18.
 
Among W&M's All-Time Best
One of the most productive attackers in school history, Belle Martire currently among the top 10 in school history in career goals (127) and points (170). She currently ranks sixth in goals and tied for 10th in points.
 
Starr Howard also ranks among the Tribe's best in draw controls and ranks eighth all-time with 102. She needs seven more to move into a tie for seventh with Morgan Lang (2003-06), who finished her career with 109 DC.
 
Captains
W&M is led by a quintet of captains this season – Belle Martire, Sabrina Schrader, Grace Ahonen, Lauren Russell and Caroline Donovan. All five captains have distinguished themselves as outstanding leaders both on and off the field throughout their careers.
