WILLIAMSBURG, VA. - The
Mike McRae era will begin Friday afternoon as William & Mary baseball takes the field at Plumeri Park to open the 2022 season. The Tribe will welcome in Rhode Island for a Friday afternoon game before a Saturday doubleheader to begin the 2022 campaign.
Friday's first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader will begin at noon. Live stats are available on the schedule page and each of the Tribe's home games will be streamed live on FloSports.
The Tribe returns 13 position players and 17 pitchers from last season's team that made the CAA Tournament and finished fourth in the southern division of the league in 2021. Rhode Island welcomes back six players who made at least 20 starts last season on a team that won the northern division of the A-10 in 2021.
Headlining the William & Mary roster are preseason all-league selections
Jack Cone and
Ben Williamson. Cone is a two-way senior that hit .304 last season while patrolling center field and led the team with four saves, allowing just two runs in 8.1 innings against CAA teams. Williamson held down the hot corner and scored a team-high 27 runs to go with a .315 batting average. The team also returns
Matt Thomas,
David Hogarth, and
Tyler Solomon who each played in at least 40 games last season.
Zach Tsakounis led all returning pitchers, tossing 62.0 innings in 2021. The lefty recorded a 3.63 ERA and had nearly a three to one strikeout to talk ratio. Fellow lefty
Justin Pearson is back after throwing 52.1 innings over 16 appearances and winning four games last season, and
Matt Howat will stabilize the bullpen as he did in 2021 leading the team with 20 appearances.
