WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — William & Mary head baseball coach Rob McCoy announced the hiring of Campbell Ellis as the program's pitching coach on Monday afternoon.

Ellis comes to the Tribe from VCU, where he spent the past year as the program's Director of Pitching Development.

"After going through an extensive and exhaustive process to find the next pitching coach here at W&M, I am excited to welcome Campbell to the Tribe," McCoy said. "He is an energetic leader with extensive knowledge of player and staff development. He is well-versed in today's world of technology and data while emphasizing competitiveness and mentality."

"As a four-time NCAA regional participant as a player and a coach, he knows what it needs to look like and how to help get us there. I couldn't be more happy to have him join us and inspire our staff to excellence."

Ellis helped oversee a Rams pitching staff that led the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 4.57 team ERA in 2026, nearly a full run better than the next-closest team and the 35th-best mark in Division I. VCU also led the league in hits per nine innings (8.13) and WHIP (1.42) en route to winning the A-10 Tournament and winning a game at the Chapel Hill Regional.

Ellis previously served as a graduate assistant for the Rams in 2025. During his two-year stint in Richmond, he helped tutor a pair of first team all-conference selections in Patrick Steitz and Zachary Peters, along with all-rookie honoree Dawson Newman.

Ellis had an impressive career as a pitcher for VCU from 2021-24, as he was part of three A-10 Tournament Championship teams and NCAA Regional squads. As a sophomore in 2022, Ellis posted a 3.27 ERA while breaking the single-season program record for games started with 21, a figure that led all of Division I. He was named to the Chapel Hill Regional All-Tournament Team after tossing four scoreless innings in an upset win over the 11th-ranked Tar Heels.

Ellis burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2021, going 6-1 with a 3.25 ERA as a reliever. For his career, he recorded 16 wins and 152 strikeouts.

A native of Georgetown, Ontario, Ellis graduated from VCU in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in history before earning a master's degree in sport leadership.
