WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary women's soccer alumna Kathy Carter '91 was recently elevated to chief executive of the Organizing Committee for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. She previously served as the Chief Revenue Officer of LA28 since 2018.
Â
"Kathy was always a natural-born leader," W&M head coach
Julie Shackford '88 said. "As a teammate and goalkeeper, she was gritty, confident, and always rose to the occasion no matter the circumstances. Â She has been a force in the soccer world for decades and her new position comes as no surprise. We wish her the best and know the Olympic Games are in good hands."
Â
Prior to joining LA28, Carter spent eight years as president of Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the company that holds the U.S. Soccer Federation and Major League Soccer commercial portfolio. A founding MLS executive in the 1990s, Carter left that role in April of 2018 after finishing second in the hotly-contested race for U.S. Soccer president. She is also a previous winner of the Women in Sports and Events' Woman of the Year award.
Â
Carter was a standout goalie for the Tribe from 1987-90. She appeared in 72 matches and is still tied for the school record of a 0.78 goals-against-average. Carter earned her degree in government from W&M in 1991.
