The William & Mary women's track & field team opened the Colonial Relays on Friday with three wins, including its first-ever victories in the 100m dash and the 400m hurdles. There is no team scoring at the meet this year, but W&M had a total of 12 top-five finishes on the day.
The top performance on the day came in the 100m dash, where the Tribe put two women in the top-five. Redshirt-freshman
Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.) blazed to a school-record time of 12.06 seconds for the win, her first school record and breaking the record of 12.09 that had stood for 15 years. Johnson's win was also the first-ever for W&M in the 100m dash. Freshman
Chelsea Michell (Canton, Conn.) was fifth overall in 12.15 seconds, breaking the freshman record that had stood since 1989. Mitchell's time was the third-fastest race in school history, and ranks her third all-tie among athletes.
Just moments later, W&M won the 400m hurdles as well, thanks to another rookie running veteran times.
Mary Gregory (Reston, Va.), who was running the 400m hurdles for the first time, won the event in 1:05.04 to give W&M gold for the first time ever at the Colonial Relays hurdles. Redshirt-senior
Josie Landis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was fourth overall, running 1:06.68.
The third and final win came in the 5,000m on Friday night. Freshman
Kyra Holland (Warrenton, Va.) led from the gun and never looked back, running 17:02.72 in her first collegiate 5,000m to collect the victory, W&M's first in the event since 2016.
Other notable performances included the javelin, where redshirt-freshman
Kristen Herr (Willow Street, Pa.) improved her season-best throw for the third time in as many weeks, taking second overall at 42.69m (140-0). That improved Herr to fifth all-time at W&M in the event. Her classmate
Zoe Metzger (Wayne, Pa.) was fourth in the javelin, throwing 34.08m (111-9). In the steeplechase, redshirt-freshman
Kaycee Cox-Philyaw (Linden, Va.) took third overall in 11:49.73, and in the long jump, the freshman Mitchell took fifth overall with a jump of 5.39m (17-8.25). Fifth place honors also went to freshman
Emily Morris (Glen Allen, Va.) in the 10,000m run, timing 38:31.11 in her first attempt at the longest race, and to redshirt-freshman
Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.) in the 400m, running 57.97 seconds. In the 1,500m, freshman
Lily Schlossberg (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran 4:39.16, crossing the finish fifth overall.
The Colonial Relays continue on Saturday, with events beginning at 11:30 a.m.
