William & Mary redshirt-junior
Michael Fairbanks (Fairfax Station, Va.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, after a record-breaking performance at Navy last weekend. This is the second week in a row that W&M has claimed the award, and it is the second award of Fairbanks' career.
Competing at the Navy Spring Meet, Fairbanks had a big breakthrough in the pole vault to shatter not only his own personal best, but also the W&M program record. He cleared the bar at 5.43m (17-9.75), surpassing his previous best (indoors or out) by nine inches, and also breaking the school outdoor record of 5.36m (17-7) set by
Derek O'Connell '16 in 2016. Fairbanks' performance was also higher than the indoor program record of 5.42m (17-9.25) set by O'Connell during the winter of 2016. Currently, Fairbanks ranks second in the NCAA East Region in the pole vault, and 12th overall nationally.
William & Mary is back home this weekend, hosting the Colonial Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 2-3.
