William & Mary freshman
Jayden Moon (Spotsylvania, Va.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Field Hockey Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, after helping lift the Tribe to a 2-1 victory over Drexel on Thursday. This is the first award of the season for W&M, and the first of Moon's career.
Moon, a speedy midfielder, scored the first point of her career and the first point of the season for W&M's freshman class during Thursday's win. In the 28th minute with the Tribe leading 1-0, Moon sent a long pass in from the 23-meter line to find
Lily Saunders (Mount Joy, Pa.) in front of the near post, and Saunders was able to redirect the ball into the narrow gap between the goalkeeper's pad and the post for the 2-0 lead. That would wind up being a crucial goal, as Drexel would get a score in the second half to pull within 2-1 before W&M closed out the game with a strong defensive stand. Earlier last week, Moon was also named an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction for recording a GPA over 3.9 in her first semester of college.
William & Mary is back in action next weekend, April 9-11, hosting Towson and Delaware at Busch Field. There is no general public admittance, though select family members and students with W&M-issued I.D. can attend the games while following proper health and safety guidelines.
