RICHMOND, Va. - Senior
Erin Griffin scored a second-half goal, but William & Mary field hockey suffered a 5-1 loss at Richmond on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Griffin pulled the Tribe within 3-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Junior
Ellen Ford played the ball into the circle from the left side, and freshman
Alora Chappell redirected it into the path of Griffin. The Tribe senior used some nice stick work to control the ball and then flip it into the right side of the cage for her first goal of the season. It was the first career assist for Chappell.
Â
The Spiders scored twice in the final period to put the game out of reach. Clara Larripa completed her hat trick off a penalty corner midway through the fourth period, before Remy Phan notched UR's fifth tally, scoring at the back post off a deflected pass with just over five minutes left.Â
Â
Richmond (10-7) scored three times in the first half to take control. The Spiders opened the scoring just over two minutes in off the game's initial penalty corner. The ball eventually worked its way to the right post where Emma Williams pushed it across to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
Â
W&M nearly tied it just 42 seconds later as senior
Natasha Browning and junior
Sophie Ermellini got behind the Richmond defense. Browning centered a pass to Ermellini whose shot beat the on-rushing Spider goalkeeper. UR's Madelyn Curtis was able to keep the attempt out of the goal for a defensive save, preserving the 1-0 Spider lead.Â
Â
Larripa scored twice in the late stages of the second quarter to send the home team to the locker room with a 3-0 lead. She carried the ball into the circle and scored into the upper part of the cage in the 25th minute. Her second goal came just 3:35 later. W&M goalkeeper
Alexandra de Jesus made the save on Larripa's first shot from the right side, but the rebound went right back to the Spider forward and she scored into the right side of the cage.
Â
Richmond outshot the Tribe, 20-4, on the afternoon and generated seven penalty corners to W&M's two. Ermellini led the Tribe with two shots, both on goal. de Jesus tallied eight saves in goal on the afternoon. Junior
Mackinzie Brown tallied her second defensive save in as many games.Â
Â
