The William & Mary women's track & field team capped off its indoor season on Saturday at the Mason Winter Track Fiesta, collecting a plethora of personal-bests along the way. The Tribe won two events on the day out of eight it competed in, and set eight new entries in the W&M record books.
60m Dash
Leading things off was the 60m dash, where sophomore
Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.) ran a pair of personal-bests, the fastest races since 2006, and improved herself to second all-time among Tribe athletes. In the prelims of the event, Johnson ran 7.86 seconds for fifth, tied for the ninth-fastest race ever at W&M, and a personal-best of 0.01 seconds. In the finals, she shaved another hundredth of second, down to 7.85 seconds, and finished fifth overall. That performance took over the ninth-fastest spot all-time at W&M, and ranks Johnson behind only school record-holder
Erica Johnson '06. Also in the 60m, freshman
Chelsea Mitchell (Canton, Conn.) ran a personal-best 7.91 seconds in the prelims, before taking eighth in the finals at 7.98 seconds. Mitchell now moves up to a tie for sixth all-time among Tribe athletes. Rounding out the event was freshman
Megan Heidebrecht (Amissville, Va.), 17th in 8.16 seconds.
400m Dash
In the 400m dash, freshman
Grace Bir (Falls Church, Va.) led a Tribe sweep of the top three spots, winning the event in 58.00 seconds. Bir now ranks 11th in school history in the event. Her classmate
Mary Gregory (Reston, Va.) was second in 58.54 seconds, and sophomore
Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.) was third in 58.85 seconds.
500m Dash
Freshman
Makenzie Joiner (Mechanicsville, Va.) finished third overall in the 500m dash, running 1:17.38 on the flat 200m track. Senior
Josie Landis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished right behind her in 1:18.68 for fourth place, and a personal-best by 2.8 seconds.
4x400m Relay
Finishing out the day on the track was the 4x400m relay, where the team of Gregory, Bir, Swierbut, and Joiner combined to win the event in 3:52.40. That is the 14th-fastest time in school history indoors.
Pole Vault
Over in the field events, freshman
Olesya Sitkowski (Phoenixville, Pa.) cleared a big personal-best and took third in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 3.71m (12-2). That was her highest-ever vault by two inches, and moved her up to a tie for seventh all-time among Tribe athletes. Senior
Taylor E. Jones (Fairfax Station, Va.) was sixth at 3.41m (11-2.25), and freshman
Elizabeth Upright (Oakton, Va.) cleared a season-best 3.26m (10-8.25) for 11th overall.
High Jump
Redshirt-freshman
Liliana Klemanski (Cicero, N.Y.) made her W&M debut in the high jump, taking third at a height of 1.50m (4-11).
Long Jump
The freshmen Mitchell and Heidebrecht were back it in the long jump, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Mitchell hit the sand at 5.21m (17-1.25), while Heidebrecht recorded a jump of 5.19m (17-0.5).
Pentathlon
Both starting and finishing the day for W&M was the pentathlon, where redshirt-sophomore
Claire Bailey (Fairfax, Va.) shined in her hometown. Bailey improved her best score in the multi-event by more than 200 points, and took fourth overall at 3,155 points. That performance ranks Bailey 11th all-time among Tribe athletes. In the component events, she set a pair of personal-bests, first in the long jump a 4.93m (16-2.25), and then in the final event of the schedule, the 800m, where she ran 2:34.37 for second overall. Bailey also won the shot put at 12.31m (40-4.75), just barely behind her lifetime-best set earlier this month at Navy.
With the indoor season now complete, William & Mary turns its attentions outdoors. Next Friday, March 5, the cross country team will race at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships hosted by UNCW, looking for its sixth title in the last eight years. The outdoor season will get underway in late March with a tune-up, before the Colonial Relays return to Zable Stadium and the Dan Stimson Throwing Events Area Friday and Saturday, April 2-3.
