The William & Mary men's cross country team kept a a tight 32-second spread between its first and fifth runners at the season-opening Spider/Patriot Winter XC Classic on Saturday afternoon, running to a seventh-place finish in the five-mile race. No. 14-ranked Iona scored 24 points for the easy win, with Connecticut taking second overall with 57 points. Individually, the Gaels had the top two finishers, with Jack O'Leary taking the victory in 24:22.4 at Pole Green Park.
For the Tribe, top honors went to senior
Spencer Tsai (Eugene, Ore.), who crossed the finish line in 25:22.2 for 28th overall. Redshirt-junior
Johnny Rogers (Vienna, Va.) was 34th in 25:34.0, mere steps ahead of freshman
Sam Pritchard (Springfield, Va.) who was 36th overall in 25:37.4. Redshirt-freshmen
Joshua Shackelford (Hayes, Va.) and
Tyler Lipps (Virginia Beach, Va.) completed the scoring five in 48th and 52nd, respectively, running 25:49.4 and 25:54.2. Redshirt-sophomore
Ryan McCracken (Richmond, Va.) finished 56th overall in 25:56.2, and freshman
Alex Sawyer (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out the varsity seven in 26:04.9, crossing the line 60th overall.
William & Mary's next cross country race comes in two weeks, on Friday, March 5, at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, hosted this year by UNCW. Next weekend, there will also be a racing opportunity on the indoor track at the George Mason Indoor Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 28.
