The William & Mary women's track & field team made the most of its chances on Sunday at the ECAC Championships, shattering six school records and earning a total of eight All-East honors to close out the indoor season. The Tribe finished fourth overall in the 42-team field with 43 points, its best-ever finish indoors, and tied for its best ECAC finish ever including outdoors. Towson won the team title with 63 points, while Connecticut was second with 59.75 and Albany third with 58 points.

- One of the Tribe's most impressive records came later in the day, and at the hands of one of its youngest members. Freshman
Keeley Suzenski (Fleetwood, Pa.) came into the meet seeded just 17th in the shot put, but put together an incredible six-put series to become the ECAC Champion. Her first attempt was 13.97m, breaking her own freshman record, and she then kept improving through each of the first three rounds to 14.41m and then 14.66m, the latter just 2 centimeters behind the school record. Suzenski held the lead going into finals, and while that lead would have held up for the win, she kept pushing, and it paid off on the final throw of the meet with a massive 15.37m (50-5.25) put to demolish not only her freshman record, but also the school record and her lifetime-best. Suzenski is the first woman in school history, indoors or outdoors, to surpass 50 feet in the shot put, and she is also the first Tribe woman to ever win the ECAC shot put. Also in the shot put, sophomore
Chelsea Wallace (Chesapeake, Va.) was 27th overall with a put of 12.34m (40-6).
- For the second day in a row, redshirt-junior
Victoria Gersch (Mercer Island, Wash.) broke a pair of school records that she already held. First up was the 400m dash, where she ran 55.40 seconds for fifth overall and All-East honors. That improved her prelim time by 0.04 seconds. Later, she finished eighth in the 200m dash in 24.43 seconds, besting her previous record from the prelims by another 0.13 seconds. Gersch became the first woman in school history to earn All-East honors in either event, much less both in the same day.
- Gersch's classmate
Susanna Maisto (Silver Spring, Md.) earned her own school record in the 500m dash, running 1:13.05 to finish fifth overall. That lopped nearly a full half-second off the previous record set by
Ashley Madonick '09 at the 2009 ECAC Championships, and gave Maisto All-East honors for the second year in a row. Also in the 500m, senior
Gabby Runge (Midlothian, Va.) ran a lifetime-best for the second day in a row, running 1:14.15 for ninth place overall. That was the ninth-fastest race in school history, and improved Runge to fifth all-time among Tribe athletes.
- The very next event saw yet another school record. Junior
Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) ran a personal-best yesterday in the prelims of the 1,000m run, and did it again Sunday to finish second overall in 2:49.30. That broke the school record by 0.3 seconds, previously set by
Amy Morris '99 at the 1998 ECAC Championships.
- The sixth and last school record came in the final event of the weekend, the 4x400m relay. W&M ran with the team of Runge, Maisto, freshman
Carly Swierbut (Newtown, Conn.), and Gersch, and shattered the old record by 2.43 seconds to run 3:43.05 and finish fourth overall. The previous record was set at the ECAC finals last year by a team that included all three seniors. This year's team also set a record for the highest-finish in program history, taking fourth overall.
- Earlier in the day, W&M's first All-East performance of the day came to senior
Alexis Brender a Brandis (Williamsburg, Va.), who finished fourth overall in the triple jump. She had four jumps over 12 meters in her series, including a lifetime-best 12.30m (40-4.25) that was her first-ever jump over 40 feet. That was the third-longest jump ever at W&M, and ranks Brender a Brandis second all-time among athletes behind only
Jennifer Walker '98. Brender a Brandis' All-East award was just the second ever in the triple jump indoors at W&M, joining Walker who was third in 1998.
- In the mile run, junior
Lauren Finikiotis (Gibsonia, Pa.) brought her strong season to a close, finishing seventh overall in 4:53.42 to earn her first individual All-East award.
- W&M also competed in the distance medley relay, with the team of
Deirdre Lewin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.),
Amaya Johnson (Sterling, Va.),
Kaycee Cox-Philyaw (Linden, Va.), and Finikiotis combining to run a season-fast 11:59.94 and take 11th overall.
With the regular season now concluded, William & Mary turns its attention to the outdoor campaign, which will begin at home on Saturday, March 21, with the Dan Stimson Memorial Meet.
