The William & Mary women's swimming team took care of business on Saturday morning in the final set of prelims at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, advancing a league-high 14 swimmers to finals including nine to the championship heats. In the unofficial and projected team standings, the Tribe took a slight lead heading into tonight with 525 points, with James Madison second at 484 and Towson in third with 456 points.
200 Backstroke
W&M started off with all three swimmers in the 200 back advancing, including two in the championship heat. Junior
Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) led the way in seventh place, at 2:00.46, just ahead of sophomore
Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) in eighth at 2:00.85. Sophomore
Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.) was ninth in prelims to earn the top seed in the consolation finals, with a time of 2:01.02.
100 Freestyle
In the 100 free, sophomore
Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) and freshman
Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.) both swam lifetime-bests to advance to the championship heat. Cundiff timed 50.60 seconds for sixth overall, and now ranks seventh in school history, while the rookie Stevenson stopped the clock in 50.76 seconds for seventh place. She now ranks eighth all-time among W&M athletes. Sophomore
Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) advancing to the consolation finals in 13th overall, with a time of 51.77 seconds.
200 Breaststroke
Junior
Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) led the way for W&M in the 200 breast, timing 2:16.06 to earn the second seed in the championship finals. That was also the fifth-fastest single time in school history. She'll be joined in the top heat by freshman
Peyton Proffitt (Richmond, Va.), seventh in a collegiate-best 2:19.24 to rank 16th all-time among Tribe athletes. Senior
Lauren Freeman (Fairfax Station, Va.) made the consolation finals, swimming 2:21.27 for 13th overall.
200 Butterfly
The final event of the morning was one of the Tribe's strongest, with five women in total advancing, including three to the championship heat. Sophomore
Rebecca Rogers (Richmond, Va.) led the way with her third-place time of 2:03.15, while freshman
Maura Graff (Henrico, Va.) swam 2:04.03 for seventh and sophomore
Gabby Zhang (Ashburn, Va.) was eighth overall in 2:04.49. Advancing to the consolation finals was freshman
Grace Tramack (Palo Alto, Calif.), ninth overall in 2:04.61, as well as senior
Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.), who placed 10th in 2:04.76.
The finals of all four events, as well as the 1-meter diving, the 1,650 free, and the 400 free relay, begin tonight at 6 p.m.
