W&M Women Win 200 Free Relay on Night Two of CAA Championships

The William & Mary women's swimming team put itself in a good position following the second night of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on Thursday, picking up two individual silvers and winning the 200 free relay for the first time since 2017.  With seven events now complete, including the first of two diving events, W&M is in second place overall with 213.5 points, behind only James Madison with 262 points.  Towson is third with 196 points, ahead of Delaware (169.5), UNCW (156), and Drexel (145).  Northeastern rounds out the team standings with 96 points.

500 Free
Starting the evening off was the 500 freestyle, and a silver medal for junior Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.).  Bull swam a season-best 4:48.37, the fourth-fastest time in school history, to finished second overall.  Freshman Elizabeth Intihar (Columbus, Ohio) swam her second lifetime-best of the day to take fifth overall, stopping the clock in 4:51.18.  That was the 14th-fastest race ever at W&M, and improved Intihar to fourth all-time among Tribe athletes.  In the consolation finals, junior Tara Tiernan (West Hartford, Conn.) was 10th overall in 4:55.06, and senior Norah Hunt (Stuarts Draft, Va.) added another point in 16th at 5:00.44.

200 Individual Medley
Next up was the 200 IM, and another couple of strong performances from the freshman class.  Maura Graff (Henrico, Va.) swam her second lifetime-best of the day, and tied for fifth overall in 2:03.92.  That improved her to seventh all-time in program history.  Senior Julia Bland (Sea Girt, N.J.) was eighth overall in the championship finals at 2:07.23, and freshman Peyton Proffitt (Richmond, Va.) was 12th in the consolation finals, with a season-best time of 2:05.65.

50 Free
In the 50 free, sophomore Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) was just off her time from this morning, but took third overall for her first individual all-conference honor.  She swam 22.59, another NCAA provisional qualifier, and the 14th-fastest time in school history.  Freshman Katie Stevenson (Wilton, Conn.) was seventh overall in 23.52 seconds, and in the consolation finals, sophomores Inez Olszewski (New York, N.Y.) and Sonora Baker (Mechanicsville, Va.) were 15th and 16th, respectively, in 23.80 seconds and 24.11 seconds.

200 Free Relay
After the diving event, W&M was back in the pool for the 200 free relay.  Cundiff led things off in a 22.57 showing, which takes over as the No. 14 time in school history.  That staked the Tribe to second at the first exchange, by 0.06, but Stevenson quickly erased that deficit with her 23.11 split, putting W&M ahead with a lead that it would not relinquish.  Olszewski was next in the water with a 23.06 split, and sophomore Anna Kenna (Chantilly, Va.) charged into the water and refused to let anyone pass her, bringing the team home in 1:32.36 for the win.  It was the ninth-fastest race ever at W&M, and the first win in the 200 free relay since 2017.  Stevenson and Olszewski both won their second championships, after also swimming on the 800 free relay last night, while Cundiff and Kenna collected their first CAA golds.

The CAA Championships continue Friday, starting with prelims at 10 a.m.  The days events will include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and the 400 medley relay.
