The William & Mary men's track & field team put up an impressive showing on Friday night at the VMI Indoor Classic, winning two twice and collecting three IC4A qualifiers in just five events. The Tribe also tied a freshman record on the night, and leads the unofficial team standings with 42 points.
- One of the team's wins came in the final event of the night, the 5,000m run, where redshirt-junior
JP Trojan (Chardon, Ohio) qualified for the IC4A Championships in his third different event while running 14:29.30. Freshman
Tyler Lipps (Virginia Beach, Va.) was third in 15:21.13, and redshirt-freshman
Ryan McCracken (Richmond, Va.) took eighth overall in a time of 15:35.91.
- All-American junior
KJ Cook (Buena Vista, Va.) continued his steady march up the all-time leaderboard in the weight throw, winning and setting a lifetime-best for the second week in a row. He threw the weight 19.61m (64-4) on Friday for the win, the ninth-longest throw in school history, and improved his position as the second-ranked thrower in school history. Sophomore
Troy Yearwood (Chesapeake, Va.) was right behind him in second place, throwing 19.38m (63-7) for the 12th-best throw in school history and another IC4A qualifier.
- In the 60m hurdles, freshman
Daniel Layton (Waynesburg, Pa.) ran 8.48 in the prelims and advanced to the semifinals, where he improved to 8.44 seconds and finished his meet in 12th place overall. That semifinal performance ties the freshman record Layton set last week at Penn State, and confirms his position as the fifth-ranked hurdler all-time at W&M.
- In the 1,000m run, the Tribe had two more scoring performances. Freshman
Andrew Lagattuta (Glen Rock, N.J.) ran 2:30.30 for fifth overall, finishing just a step ahead of redshirt-sophomore
John Cacciatore (Indialantic, Fla.), sixth in a time of 2:30.76.
The VMI Indoor Classic resumes on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
