The William & Mary women's track & field team got off to a roaring start Friday at the VMI Indoor Classic, winning two events and also earning seven ECAC qualifiers on the night. The Tribe also broke yet another freshman record, and stands first in the unofficial team scoring with 69 points.
- Breaking her own freshman record in the shot put was rookie
Keeley Suzenski (Fleetwood, Pa.), thanks to a third-place put of 13.78m (45-2.5). That was a full foot better than the mark she set back in December, and qualified Suzenski to the ECAC Championships for the first time. She now ranks seventh all-time among Tribe athletes. Also in the shot put, sophomore
Chelsea Wallace (Chesapeake, Va.) had an indoor-best put of 13.35m (43-9.75) to finish sixth overall. Wallace improved to 10th all-time in school history.
- W&M's first win of the day came in the the 4x800m relay, where the team of
Taylor D. Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.),
Megan Dougherty (Sinking Spring, Pa.),
Anna Cestari (Washington, D.C.), and
Deirdre Lewin (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) combined to carry the baton 16 laps in a time of 9:23.95, just shy of the ECAC qualifying standard.
- Also picking up a win was senior
Alexis Brender a Brandis (Williamsburg, Va.), taking the triple jump with an indoor-best mark of 11.85m (38-10.5). That was the 10th-longest jump in school history for W&M's third-ranked triple jumper all-time, and qualified Brender a Brandis for the ECAC Championships. Junior
Taylor E. Jones (Fairfax Station, Va.) was 10th overall, with a jump of 11.23m (36-10.25).
- Jones (the jumper) had an ECAC qualifier of her own earlier in the afternoon, topping the bar in the pole vault at a height of 3.65m (11-11.75) for second overall. This is the second year in a row that Jones has qualified for the ECAC meet. Senior
Lauren Graves (Fredericksburg, Va.) was fifth at the height of 3.50m (11-5.75), and redshirt-junior
Sophie Caplan (Clarksville, Md.) was 10th with the bar at 3.35m (10-11.75).
- W&M's distance medley relay team qualified for the ECAC Championships, finishing second overall in 12:01.04. That team was led off by Jones (the runner), in her first of two relay legs on the day, and also included
Kaycee Cox-Philyaw (Linden, Va.), Lewin, and
Lauren Finikiotis (Gibsonia, Pa.).
- In the 5,000m, senior
Liv Paxton (Rock Hill, S.C.) ran an easy 17:09.60 for second overall, and an ECAC qualifier in her second event of the season. She's also qualified in the 3,000m.
Lauren Kroepfl (Robbinsville, N.J.) was sixth overall in 17:59.46, and
Megan Kolbe (Doylestown, Pa.) ran a lifetime-best by more than 40 seconds while finishing eighth in 18:12.05.
- W&M's final two ECAC marks both came in the 60m hurdles, where junior
Jadyn Currie (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a career day. First, in the prelims, she broke nine seconds for the first time and blasted a lifetime-best 8.87 for third overall. That was the ninth-fastest time ever at W&M, and moved Currie up to second in school history. Then, in the semifinals, she ran even faster, 8.86 seconds, and advanced to Saturday's finals in fifth place overall. That second race became the new ninth-fastest race in school history, and both performances came in well under the ECAC qualifying barrier.
- Rounding out the day's notable performances was the 1,000m run. Redshirt-sophomore
Julia Lambert (Virginia Beach, Va.) took sixth overall in 3:03.04, and redshirt-junior
Karina Tavares (Bristol, R.I.) was ninth in 3:11.41.
The VMI Indoor Classic resumes on Saturday morning, with the finals of the 60m hurdles beginning at 11:05 a.m.
