Women's Tennis Tops Big South Champion Winthrop for Second-Straight Win

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary women's tennis picked up its second win in as many days to start the 2020 season, topping reigning Big South Champion Winthrop, 5-2, on Sunday morning at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. After the Tribe claimed a close doubles point, W&M (2-0) won the first four singles matches off the court, including the clincher from junior Vitoria Okuyama.

How It Happened
- After Winthrop (0-2) won the opening doubles match at No. 2, Okuyama and sophomore Mila Saric pulled the Tribe even with a victory at the top spot, 6-3. The pair jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then claimed the final two games after the Winthrop pair of Alisa Soloveva and Rafaela Santos closed to within 4-3.
- With No. 3 doubles tied at four, the Tribe duo of senior Charlotte Madson and freshman Elisa Van Meeteren won the final two games to pull out a 6-4 win over Jamie Edwards and Samantha Nanere and clinch the initial point of the match. The tandem won for the second-straight day, both of which clinched doubles for the Green and Gold.
- Saric picked up her 10th singles win of the year and won for the second time in as many days in straight sets at No. 2.  The Tribe sophomore dropped Santos, 6-1, 6-3, to push the Tribe lead to 2-0.
- Van Meeteren won her first career singles dual-match to increase the Tribe advantage to 3-0. The Green and Gold rookie topped fellow freshman Angela Georgieva in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 for her sixth win of the year.
- Okuyama needed three sets but clinched the Tribe victory with a triumph at No. 4. She blitzed Alexandra Ferreira da Silva, 6-0, in the first set before the Eagle rookie bounced back with a 6-2 win in the second. Okuyama won three of the final four games in the third set to pick up her first career clinching win, 6-4. The Tribe junior improved to 7-4.
- Madson rounded out the Tribe singles victories with her second win in as many days at No. 5. Trailing 5-2 in the first set, Madson won five-straight games to pull out a 7-5 win over Samantha Nanere. The Tribe senior won the final two games of the second set to claim a matching 7-5 triumph. Madson notched her fifth win of the year.
- Winthrop posted wins in narrow fashion at No. 1 and No. 3 to provide the final 5-2 margin.
