W&M Swimming Hosts George Washington on Senior Day

The William & Mary men's & women's swim teams will bring the regular season to a close on Saturday, hosting perennial Atlantic-10 power George Washington at 1 p.m.  Admission to the Rec Center Pool is free of charge, and the meet can also be followed via live results on TribeAthletics.com and through the Meet Mobile App.

Live Results

Senior Day
Before the meet gets started, at approximately 12:45 p.m., William & Mary will honor the 16 members of the Senior Class who will be swimming at home for the final time.  These nine men and seven women have made W&M swimming one of the most respected and successful programs in the NCAA over their four years, combining for four of the six possible Colonial Athletic Association Championships and an overall mark of 58-27, including a 13-3 record in Williamsburg.

Scouting the Tribe Men
On the men's side, W&M downed Davidson 195-66 last week to improve to 7-1 overall on the year.  The performance included six pool records and six dual meet records, and senior Colin Wright (Williamsburg, Va.) was named the CAA Swimmer of the Week for the third time this season after having a hand in eight of those 12 records.  Overall on the year, Wright leads the Tribe in scoring with 308.75 points and ranks second with 15 wins.  His classmate Chris Balbo (Short Hills, N.J.) leads in wins, with 17, and ranks second in scoring with 270.5 points.

Scouting the Tribe Women
The W&M women also won in the meet over Davidson, downing the Wildcats 155-107 for their fifth straight win and a 5-4 record overall.  Junior Megan Bull (Hillsborough, N.J.) continued to roll in whatever event she swims, winning both of her races to lift her team-leading totals to 341.75 points and 17 wins, while sophomore Missy Cundiff (Leesburg, Va.) ranks second in both categories with 10 wins and 249.25 points.  Bull's two wins last week also lifted her past the 1,000-point milestone, and she currently has 1,015.25 points scored in less than three full seasons.

Scouting the Colonials Men
George Washington improved to 4-3 on the season last week with a win over Georgetown, 153-90, on their Senior Day.  Peter Nachtwey was named the Atlantic-10 Performer of the Week after sweeping the diving events, while DH Hwang (in the 500 free and 1,000 free) and Haoning Chen (200 free and 100 breast) both also won a pair of events.

Scouting the Colonials Women
The GW women also beat Georgetown, 155-88, to improve to 6-3 on the year.  Among the event winners were senior Gemma Atherly in the 200 free and Jackie Torrez in the 200 IM.

The Series
- On the men's side, George Washington leads the series with W&M 18-9, dating all the way back to February of 1931.  The Colonials won seven in a row from 1992 to 2002, but the Tribe has won the last three in a row, including 178-96 in the last meeting in 2016.

- W&M leads the women's series 14-10 all-time against George Washington, dating back to 1978.  The Tribe has won four of the last five, including 164-106 in the last meeting on Jan. 9, 2016, while the Colonials had won six in a row before that over the course of the 1990s.

News and Notes
- With last week's win over Davidson, the W&M men's swimming team improved to .500 all-time in program history (405-405-3, dating back to the 1927-28 season) for the first time in 87 years, 11 months, and 13 days.  W&M beat Roanoke 54-12 on Jan. 16, 1932, to improve to 10-10 in just its fifth year of existence, but lost to powerhouse Washington & Lee, 42-24, in its next meet on Feb. 5, 1932, and didn't reach even again until last Saturday.

- The last time the Tribe men had an all-time winning record was Jan. 30, 1931, at 8-7 overall before losing 40-22 at Virginia that afternoon.

- George Washington is one of W&M's first and most famous "graduate" alumni.  He never attended undergrad in Williamsburg, but did receive his surveyor's license from W&M in 1749.  Article XVI of the Royal Charter appointed the college to server as the Surveyor-General of the colony, with the right and responsibility to examine and license surveyors.

- Freshman Grace Tramack (Palo Alto, Calif.) was named the Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie Swimmer of the Month for November, after scoring 149.25 points in that month alone with two individual victories.  For the season, she ranks third among Tribe rookies with 171.25 points and three wins, ranking seventh on the team overall.

- In addition to Tramack, the women's freshman class has been a powerhouse for W&M so far this season, accounting for seven of the top 12 places on the team scoring list.  Seven of the eight rookies have won a race, led by Elizabeth Intihar's (Columbus, Ohio) four victories.

- Five Tribe swimmers earned Olympic Trials qualifying marks over the summer.  Wright is qualified in the 50m free and the 100m free, while his classmate Jack Doherty (Middletown, Conn.) is qualified in both the 50m free and the 100m fly.  Ian Thompson (Alexandria, Va.) is qualified in the 50m free, and Ben Skopic (Marriottsville, Md.) is qualified in the 200m IM.  On the women's side, Cundiff picked up her first qualifying mark in the 50m free.

- W&M's two wins on the men's side at the CAA Pod Meet gave the Tribe 16-straight wins over conference opponents, breaking the program record of 15-straight in the Southern Conference won between 1968 and 1975.

- With his performances so far, Wright is sixth in school history with 67 career wins, just ahead of Balbo (65) who is seventh all-time.  Skopic ranks 15th for the Tribe all-time with 37 victories.

- Bull's is 12th in women's program history with 42 career victories, just three wins from joining the all-time top-10.  If she gets there this season she will also have a 20-win season for the first time in her career.

- Bull is also 11th in school history with 1,015.25 points scored overall, and is just nine points away from the all-time top-10.

- Wright passed 1,000 career points in the season-opener against Johns Hopkins, while Balbo joined the 1,000-point club at the West Virginia Invitational, becoming the seventh and eighth men in school history since 1990 to achieve that feat.  Doherty is projected to be the next swimmer on the men's side to reach 1,000, currently at 926.25, and if he gets there this season would make it the first time ever that three classmates all scored 1,000 points.

- Wright is currently fourth in school history with 1,299.5 points, one point behind Andrew Strait '14 for third place.  Second belongs Will Manion '16, with 1,362.25, while Chris Robinson '00 is the all-time scorer with 1,469.5.

- W&M has broken 30 records so far this season, with 12 of them coming last week against Davidson alone.
