Men's Basketball Opens Four-Game Homestand vs. JMU on Thursday Night

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Colonial Athletic Association leader William & Mary men's basketball opens a four-game homestand when it welcomes state rival James Madison to Williamsburg on Thursday night. It marks the program's longest homestand since 2017. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on FloHoops.

The game will be the program's Coaches vs. Cancer game, a night to help increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living. The Coaches vs. Cancer program is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The color lavender represents all forms of cancer. On Thursday night, fans are encouraged to wear lavender, pick up a lavender ribbon at the marketing table and fill out a "I fight for" card in honor of loved ones who have bravely fought cancer. In honor of Coaches vs. Cancer, the first 400 students in attendance against the Dukes will receive a One Tribe. One Fight t-shirt.

- For just the ninth time in school history, the Tribe won 14 times in its opening 20 games. It ranks as the fourth-best start in school history through 20 games. W&M sits atop the CAA standings at 6-1 despite playing five of its first seven on the road. The Tribe is 4-1 on the road in league play.

- W&M opened CAA play with six-straight wins for just the second time in school history. The Tribe completed the 1982-83 season at 9-0 in the ECAC South, which was the precursor to the CAA. It marks just the fourth time in W&M history that the Tribe has started league play at 6-0 or better and just the second time in the last 87 years.

- The 14 wins for head coach Dane Fischer and the Tribe are tied with six others for the most among programs with coaches in their first seasons - Eric Musselman (Arkansas), Mark Pope (BYU), Todd Golden (San Francisco), Eric Henderson (South Dakota State), Casey Alexander (Belmont), Darrin Horn (Northern Kentucky). Jeff Goodman of Stadium had Fischer seventh on his power rankings for national coach of the year in early January. NCAA.com writer Mike Lopresti ranked Fischer No. 8 on the list of first-year head coaches, and ESPN's Jeff Borzello listed him among three coaches in his Mid-Major surprises as part of his first-year coaching scorecard

- Senior Nathan Knight add to his list of accolades on Jan. 17 being named one of 30 national candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes excellence in community, classroom, character and competition. He was named to the mid-season watch lists for CollegeInsider.com's Lute Olsen National Player of the Year and Lou Henson Mid-Major Player of the Year awards on Jan. 7. He was also selected to the Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List by the USBWA on Dec. 6. For the second-straight year, Knight was one of 20 players named to the preseason watch list for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year award after being one of five finalists in 2019.

- In CAA play, the Tribe has held five of its seven opponents to less than 70 points. Defensively, the Tribe ranks second in league action in scoring defense (67.0), 2-point % (47.1) and field goal % (42.1), while coming in third in effective field goal % (48.3). This season, the Tribe is 10-0 when holding teams to less than 70 points and 9-0 when teams fail to shoot 40% from the field.

- Offensively in CAA games, the Tribe ranks second in the league in offensive efficiency (110.5), field goal % (47.7) 2-point % (54.9), free throw % (80.6) and effective field goal % (54.3) Overall, W&M ranks 21st nationally in effective field goal % (54.4), 37th in field goal % (46.8), 63rd in free throw % (74.5) and 65th in 3-point % (35.9)

He is one of only two players in W&M history, along with Daniel Dixon '17, to have multiple games of four made 3's without a miss. He ranks ninth in the CAA play at 42.9% (9-of-21) from 3.

He is one of two players nationally averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds per game. Knight is 17th in the country in rebounding (10.6) and 19th in scoring (20.7). He ranks fourth, among players with a 28% or higher usage rate, in offensive rating according to KenPom.com (116.5).

- Knight and Andy Van Vliet have been double trouble for Tribe opponents. They are the only teammates in the country averaging 14 points and nine rebounds per game. They are only the fifth teammates to do so since 1992-93. Knight and Van Vliet are also the only pair of teammates in the country with at least eight double-doubles apiece. Van Vliet is 25th at eight double-doubles. They have both tallied a double-double in the same game six times.

Both Roland (7) and Riller (10) posted season-low scoring totals against Loewe and the Tribe.

- W&M leads the country with eight road wins. The Tribe became the first program in CAA history to start 3-0 with all three wins on the road. It marked the sixth time in program history that Green and Gold picked up eight road wins, which ranks second in W&M history. The Tribe tied a school record with three-straight road wins to open the year.

- Knight is one of just two current D1 players with 1,800 career points and 800 career rebounds. This season, the 6-10 center moved into the program's top 10 in both scoring (4th at 1891 points) and rebounding (5th at 838). He is one of only two players in program history, along with Jeff Cohen (1958-61), to rank among the top 10 in both categories. He ranks 12th among active D1 players in scoring, eighth in rebounding and sixth in blocked shots.

- Knight was named the CAA Player of the Week a league-high third time on Jan. 6. He averaged 21 points and 9.7 rebounds per game during the three CAA road wins. Knight, who previously earned honors on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9, tied the program record of six career honors previously held by former All-American Marcus Thornton '15.
