PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior
Charlotte Madson advanced to the Flight B singles quarterfinals on the opening day of the 23rd annual Cissie Leary Memorial Invitational as William & Mary women's tennis opened the fall campaign.
After receiving a first-round bye as a No. 5-8 seed, Madson rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Columbia's Paulina Ferrari, who was an All-Ivy League Second Team pick in doubles last season. The Tribe senior meets Penn's Gibson Thomas in the Flight B quarterfinals on Saturday.
Sophomore
Mila Saric split her matches in the top singles flight. In the opening round, she downed Fordham's Arina Taluyenko, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Taluyenko was an All-Atlantic-10 First Team pick last season. It marked Saric's 20th career singles win. In the second round, Saric dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to No. 63-ranked Julia Bryzgalova of Penn.
In doubles action, both Tribe teams split matches in the top flight. After dropping an opening-round decision to Fordham's Weronika Pociej and Taluyenko, Saric and freshman
Elisa Van Meeteren defeated Temple's Okyu Boz and Yining Tian, 6-4, in the consolation round. Madson and freshman
Natalia Perry notched a tiebreaker win over Drexel's Cristina Corte González and Ghita Benhadi in the consolation flight as well.
The second day of the Cissie Leary Invitational begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Hamlin Tennis Center.
