Nate Kellogg Takes Over Reins of W&M Swimming Teams

William & Mary Director of Athletics Samantha K. Huge announced today that Nate Kellogg will take over the reins of the Tribe's renowned men's & women's swimming programs. Kellogg was promoted to head coach of both the men's and women's swimming programs after spending the last three years as an assistant coach at W&M.

"After conducting a national search, it was clear that Nate stood out among candidates, not only for his experience but also for his ability to connect with student-athletes," said Huge.  "I am confident this will be a seamless transition for our programs, and that Nate will lead our tremendous student-athletes to championships while they pursue their academic goals."

Kellogg takes over from Matt Crispino '02, who led W&M for the past 12 years before moving on to the head coaching role of Princeton's men's swimming team earlier this summer.  Associate head coach Chris Carter, who had served as the interim coach this summer, was hired as an assistant by national-power Missouri late last week.

Kellogg is the eighth head coach of the Tribe's combined program, as well as the 12th coach in women's swimming team history since 1965 and the 21st in the history of the men's team (dating back to 1928).

"I'm incredibly honored to be named William & Mary's next head coach," Kellogg said.  "I have thoroughly enjoyed the past three years with the Tribe and I'm excited to further contribute to the academic and athletic successes of our student-athletes. I want to thank Samantha and the administration for their confidence in me to positively impact our student-athletes."

During his three years as an assistant at W&M, Kellogg worked in all aspects of administering the Tribe's programs as it grew in regional and national recognition.  In the pool, Kellogg coached  W&M's strokes group, with six student-athletes under his tutelage winning CAA individual event titles, and others contributing to winning five of the last six medley relay championships in men's swimming.  Overall during Kellogg's three years, the women's team broke six school records in his event group, including the 100 back, 100 breast (twice), 200 breast (twice), and the 100 IM.  On the men's side, W&M has broken 11 school records during Kellogg's tenure in events in which he oversees, with 10 of them coming in 2018-19 alone.

Out of the pool, 2019 graduate Claire Williams (who broke the school record in the 200 breast during Kellogg's first year) was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and was also named the 2018-19 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and CAA Women's Swimming & Diving Leadership and Sports Excellence Award winner.  Williams is also a nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Kellogg came to Williamsburg in 2016, after a dozen years as Georgia Southern's all-time winningest head coach.  Taking over as interim head coach shortly before the 2004-05 season fresh out of his collegiate days at George Mason, Kellogg led the Eagles to four-straight winning seasons and a 109-59-1 (.648) record overall during his tenure.  After taking second in the NEC conference in 2006-07, Kellogg led GSU into the CCSA, where they finished in third place in each of his last five years, and went 4-0 in conference dual-meets in 2015-16.  Over that stretch, his athletes set 83 school records, had six NCAA qualifiers, and 133 total all-conference selections.

At Georgia Southern, Kellogg's team also had an outstanding academic reputation, earning CSCAA All-Academic Team honors every semester since the spring of 2007, and earning a total of 203 conference All-Academic honors.  In recognition of his outstanding work, in 2016 he was named the CCSA's co-Coach of the Year for women's swimming and diving.  A nationally recognized technical coach, over the last two decades Kellogg has consistently served as a camp coach at the University of Georgia working with youth and high school-aged athletes from beginners on up to Team USA-caliber swimmers.

Kellogg graduated from George Mason in 2004 with a degree in communications and swam for the Patriots all four years.  He went on to earn his Masters of Science in Sports Management at Georgia Southern.  Kellogg and his wife, Elizabeth, reside in Williamsburg and welcomed their first child, son Jack, in the spring of 2019.
